The feature is called Auto Best Take. It creates an AI-composited image—not a single untouched exposure. On Pixel 8 and later, Google Photos also offers Best Take, where you select faces and expressions manually.
What is Best Take on Pixel?
Best Take is Google’s group-photo feature for combining facial expressions from several similar pictures taken close together. Google announced it for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro on October 4, 2023. In Google’s description, the feature identifies a sequence of photos, examines timestamps, head poses and facial-expression signals, then lets you choose alternate faces to blend into the finished picture. Google’s announcement introduced it as a way to assemble a group shot in which everyone looks their best.
The result can help when one person blinks, looks away or has a mismatched expression in an otherwise good shot. It draws from nearby moments, rather than recovering a single instant when everyone happened to look perfect. Google says the composite is intended to feel true to the same moment because the source images were taken in quick succession. As Photos Product Manager Lillian Chen put it, “A big reason this feature resonates with people is that the composite image feels true to their memory — by drawing from pictures taken in quick succession, it’s essentially the same moment.” Google’s explanation of Best Take describes the process.
Which Pixel phones support it?

Google’s Store guidance, dated August 13, 2026, distinguishes Pixel 10’s automatic capture from the manual expression selection on older compatible Pixels. Read Google’s Best Take guidance. “Up to 150” is a stated maximum for Pixel 10, not a guarantee that every photo uses that many frames. Google has not published a general success rate or image-quality benchmark for the feature.

How to use Best Take in Google Photos
- Open the group photo: In Google Photos, open the picture you want to improve. Best Take works from a set of similar photos taken close together, so keep the related shots available in your library.
- Open the editor: Tap Edit, then look under Actions or Tools for Best Take. Google’s current Camera Help uses this path; exact menu labels can vary as the app changes.
- Choose a face: Tap one of the face bubbles shown for the people in the image.
- Select an expression: Choose an alternate expression from the suggested options. Repeat for other people whose faces you want to change.
- Review and save: Check the composite before saving it. The final image combines selected faces from the nearby source photos.
If Best Take does not appear, confirm that you are using a supported Pixel and a suitable group of similar photos. Google’s available menus and feature support can change, so consult the current Pixel Camera Help instructions for the device and app version you have.
Does Pixel 10 automatically fix group photos?
Auto Best Take automates capturing and analyzing a sequence after one shutter press, reducing the need to choose faces manually. It can produce a group-photo composite in which people have more favorable expressions, but it is not a guarantee that every face or pose will be corrected as desired. Google’s Pixel 10 guide says the feature analyzes up to 150 frames; its documentation does not provide a measured success rate.

Pixel 8 and later still offer the manual Best Take workflow in Google Photos. The distinction is convenience: Pixel 10’s Auto Best Take handles the sequence and composition automatically, while manual Best Take asks you to select expressions in the editor.
