Chrome OS Canary 76 surfaced an option to map an external keyboard’s Meta key to open Google Assistant. The discovery was an early Canary feature sighting—not confirmation that the setting reached Stable or is available on every Chromebook today.

What the Canary setting did

The reported option let users assign an external keyboard’s Meta-style key to launch Assistant, provided Assistant was enabled. On many Windows keyboards, that key is marked with the Windows logo; on many Mac keyboards, it is the Command key. Chrome OS referred to the external keyboard control as “External Meta.”

Chrome Unboxed described the control as an Assistant key-mapping option in Chrome OS Canary 76. Its report said the feature had not yet reached the Stable channel at the time. That is historical rollout context, not a statement about current availability.

How to check your Chromebook

If you already use an external keyboard, check your Chromebook’s own keyboard controls before looking for another way to access Assistant:

  1. Open Settings and go to Keyboard.
  2. Connect the external keyboard, then look for its remapping controls and an option such as External Meta or an Assistant mapping.
  3. If the control is present and Assistant is enabled, choose the Assistant action for the external Meta key and test it.

Exact labels and availability can vary. Chromium source strings include labels for “External Meta,” Assistant, and keyboard remapping, including per-device controls in a later snapshot; those strings do not establish that the setting is enabled on every current device. The reviewed sources do not establish a current availability matrix by ChromeOS version, Chromebook model, region, or managed-device policy.

Other keyboard ways to open Assistant

Google’s Pixelbook Help page documents several alternatives for that device. When the Assistant hotword is off, it says users can press a dedicated Assistant key or touch and hold Launcher. It also lists shortcuts for ChromeOS-compatible keyboards and for Windows or Mac keyboards, including Command/Windows + A. These instructions are Pixelbook-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every Chromebook supports the same keys or shortcuts.

Do you need a new keyboard?

No purchase is implied by the feature. Its purpose was to remap a key on an external keyboard, so someone who already has a suitable keyboard can check for the setting first. If you are choosing a keyboard, Google’s guidance distinguishes ChromeOS-compatible keyboards from Windows or Mac keyboards for shortcut instructions; the Canary report’s examples point to the recognizable Windows or Command key as the relevant Meta-style key.

What the Canary report does—and does not—confirm

The report establishes that the mapping appeared in Canary 76 and was not yet in Stable when it was published. It does not establish when or whether it later shipped broadly. Historical reports about other remapping controls or dedicated Assistant keys likewise should not be treated as a current compatibility list. For present-day use, the available controls on your device are the practical check.
