Its tracks range from a conventional Capture the Flag (CTF) to hardware security, research, cyber policy, and systems that automatically find and repair software vulnerabilities. The right way to join depends on the specific competition, year, and region.
What is CSAW?
CSAW brings together cybersecurity competitions, workshops, and industry events through academic centers around the world. Its current agenda names tracks including Capture the Flag, Embedded Security Challenge, Applied Research Competition, Cyber Reasoning Challenge, Hack My Robot, LLM CTF Attack Competition, Operational Technology Security Competition, Quantum Security Challenge, and Cyber Policy Competition. The agenda is a portfolio, not a promise that every track runs in every region each year. See the official CSAW agenda for the current lineup.
NIST’s NICE community page described CSAW in 2024 as a student-run event with seven cyber competitions, workshops, and industry events, with finals hosted by five global academic centers. That is useful institutional context, but it is a dated description; CSAW’s agenda has since listed additional tracks. NIST’s CSAW community listing should not be read as a definitive current track count.

Choose by the work you want to do, then check the specific event page for its current eligibility, region, format, dates, and judging rules. These details do not automatically carry over from one CSAW track or year to another.

How do you join the CSAW CTF?
For the 2025 CTF, teams were directed to register through the event’s CTF platform; the page also provides a registration contact. Use that event-specific page for the applicable process rather than assuming it is the registration route for every CSAW competition. The 2025 page said the event was open to all skill levels and teams competed within global regions.
- Open the CSAW CTF event page and follow its registration link to the CTF platform.
- Check the event-year page for team setup, region, round dates, and any current instructions.
- Use the registration contact listed on that page if you need help with CTF registration.
The 2025 page described a qualifying round followed by a final for top qualifying teams. Its qualifying round ran for 48 hours in September, while the 36-hour final took place in November and was hybrid, with participation mode dependent on region. These dates and arrangements are not verified for 2026.

What makes the CTF different from the other tracks?
A jeopardy CTF presents challenges for participants to solve and awards points for successful solutions. CSAW’s official description says: “CSAW CTF is designed for students who are trying to break into the field of security, as well as advanced students and industry professionals who want to practice their skills.”
The CTF page reports 1,216 teams with at least one point in 2021. That is a historical figure reported on the 2025 event page, not a current participation total. The same 2025 page describes region-dependent awards that included monetary prizes in some regions, a certificate, a book, and a 1TB hard drive; it does not establish one uniform prize package across regions.

What does the Embedded Security Challenge involve?
The 2025 Embedded Security Challenge focused on classic hardware-security problems, including side-channel and fault-injection attacks. Its materials also encouraged using deep learning and large language models to automate hardware attacks and design defenses. For that edition, the listed regions were US-Canada, Europe, and India; university students could compete in teams of up to four with a faculty advisor. Those are 2025 rules, not confirmed requirements for a later edition.
The 2025 repository links to ChipWhisperer documentation, and CSAW regional material links a NewAE side-channel glitching starter pack. These are learning resources, not evidence that any particular kit is required to enter. Check the current competition rules and tool compatibility before buying hardware.

- MULTIPLE WAYS TO WIN: The Conspiracy wins by pulling off the murder Plot at a specific location or secretly sabotaging and setting off traps. The Friends win by disarming all the traps, or if that fails, solving the WHO, WHERE, and WHAT of the secret Plot
How does the Cyber Reasoning Challenge work?
The 2026 Cyber Reasoning Challenge is built around automated vulnerability discovery and repair rather than manually solving a sequence of CTF puzzles. Teams develop a cyber reasoning system that works on real software targets, finds vulnerabilities, and creates patches. A patch must compile, retain intended behavior, and actually fix the defect. The system performs discovery and patching autonomously during scored runs; the inaugural event focuses on C and C++ and supplies starter baselines and an evaluation pipeline.
2026 eligibility, region, and dates
The 2026 event page says current college or university students may enter as individuals or in teams of up to four, with one faculty or staff advisor. It lists the US-Canada and MENA regions and an online competition. The page gives a registration deadline of October 1, 2026, a qualification period of October 3–4, and finals on November 12. Because event pages can change and dates are edition-specific, verify the current details on the official CRC page.

Stay within the challenge environment
The CRC rules restrict use of competition targets and infrastructure to participation, research, and education. They prohibit attacks on competition infrastructure, other teams, external services, or systems outside the released challenge environment. Work only within the authorized environment described by the rules.
How should you compare CSAW tracks?
- Problem type: Pick between manual challenge solving, hardware attacks and defenses, research presentation, or autonomous vulnerability discovery and repair.
- Eligibility and preparation: Confirm who may enter, team-size limits, advisor requirements, and any technical prerequisites on that track’s current page.
- Region and format: Check whether the event is offered in your region and whether it is online, in person, or hybrid.
- Competition structure: Review qualification and final rounds, deadlines, and scoring or judging criteria for the edition you plan to enter.
Use CSAW’s agenda to find the tracks, then follow the event-specific page for operational details. A rule or schedule published for one track or year should not be assumed to apply to another.
