You can install an Android APK on a supported Chromebook without the Google Play Store by enabling the Linux development environment, turning on ADB debugging, and installing the APK through Linux Terminal. This is Google’s documented app-deployment route; it does not guarantee that every Android app will run on every Chromebook. Back up important data first: turning off ADB debugging through the documented Chromebook Help path requires a Powerwash, which erases stored data.
Before you start: check support and policy
- ADB support: Google says ADB debugging is available on Chromebooks launched after 2020. A Chromebook’s model and ChromeOS version can affect what settings are available. See Google’s ADB setup and device-support instructions.
- Android app support: The Play Store is available only on some Chromebook models. To check, open Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not support Android apps through Google Play. See Google’s Chromebook Play Store help.
- Management restrictions: A work or school administrator may block Linux setup or ADB debugging. If this is a managed Chromebook, ask the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
- App compatibility: An APK can still fail to install or run if its developer excludes Chromebook devices or if it requires hardware the Chromebook lacks, such as GPS. Google outlines these limitations in its Android app compatibility guidance.
- Data backup: Back up files you care about before enabling ADB. Turning off ADB debugging by the Chromebook Help method requires a Powerwash, which resets the device and erases stored data. See Google’s ADB debugging help.
Install an APK with ADB
This procedure installs an APK file you already have. Only use APKs from sources you trust. ADB provides installation and debugging access; it does not verify that an APK is safe.
1. Set up the Linux development environment
- Open Settings.
- Go to About ChromeOS > Developers.
- Next to Linux development environment, select Set up, then follow the prompts.
Linux setup may take 10 minutes or more. When it finishes, ChromeOS provides a Debian environment in which you can install software using APT. See Google’s Linux setup instructions.
2. Enable ADB debugging
- Open the Linux settings on your Chromebook.
- Select Develop Android apps.
- Turn on Enable ADB debugging and restart the Chromebook when prompted.
- After restart, review the ChromeOS notice that the device may have apps not downloaded from the app store.
If the setting is unavailable or cannot be enabled, Google says a factory reset may be required. Check the Android Developers setup guidance and the Chromebook Help instructions before proceeding. Since ChromeOS 81, Google’s documented workflow lets developers use ADB without putting the Chromebook into Developer Mode; Developer Mode is not the normal prerequisite for these steps.

3. Connect ADB and install the APK
- Open the Terminal app and install ADB if it is not already installed:
sudo apt install adb - Connect ADB to ChromeOS:
adb connect arc - When ChromeOS displays an authorization prompt, review it and approve the connection only if you intended to connect ADB.
- Install the APK by running the command with the APK’s actual path and filename:
adb install /path/to/your-app.apk
If the APK is in the Linux files folder, use that file’s path in the command. Google also documents Android Studio as another app-deployment option once it is set up. The complete procedure is in Google’s Android app deployment guide for ChromeOS.
Choose the right alternative if you do not have a compatible APK
“Install an app” can mean different things on ChromeOS. An Android APK, Linux software package, and browser-delivered app are different formats and use different installation methods.

| Option | What it installs | Best fit | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADB sideloading | An Android APK | You have a compatible APK and the Chromebook supports Android apps and ADB. | App support, hardware requirements, and administrator policy can prevent installation or use. |
| Linux environment | Linux desktop or command-line software | The developer offers a Linux version or package rather than an Android APK. | Linux must be supported and enabled. Its apps share a Linux sandbox; some hardware and features are not supported. |
| Web app or Chrome extension | A browser-delivered service or extension | The app’s website or a suitable extension covers what you need. | A web app or extension is not the Android app; available features may differ. |
For ordinary use, check whether the exact app has a web version first. Use ADB when you specifically have an APK and accept the debugging setup. Google explains Linux setup and limitations in its Linux on Chromebook help, and describes browser-based alternatives in its Chrome Web Store and extensions help.

- Install only APKs from a source you trust. Treat the ADB authorization prompt as a real permission decision, not a routine confirmation.
- ADB’s installation flow is not a safety certification. The ChromeOS notice warns that apps may come from outside the app store, but it does not guarantee an APK is harmless.
- Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. Google says harmful Linux software can affect other Linux apps, while the Linux sandbox is separated from the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions shared with Linux are available to Linux apps.
- Google’s Linux support page notes limitations including unsupported cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration. These restrictions matter if you are considering Linux software instead of an Android APK.
- Turning off ADB debugging using the Chromebook Help route requires a Powerwash and erases stored data. Back up first and confirm you understand this consequence before enabling ADB.
For managed Chromebooks, contact the organization’s administrator for an approved installation route. Google notes that work or school restrictions may prevent Linux or ADB setup.
