The standalone Google Pay app in the United States stopped being available on June 4, 2024. Google Wallet continued to support contactless and online payments and payment-method management, but the old app’s send, request, and receive features for person-to-person payments did not move to Wallet. If you still have money in a Google Pay balance, Google says you can transfer it out and currently sets no withdrawal deadline.
What changed—and what did not
Google announced the US app retirement on February 22, 2024, saying the standalone app would no longer be available starting June 4. The change applied to the US version; Google said its Google Pay apps in India and Singapore were unaffected. In the announcement, Google said US users could continue using Google Wallet for popular payment features. Google’s announcement said Wallet was used “five times more” than the Google Pay app in the US; that is Google’s own 2024 comparison, not an independently audited market statistic.
| Feature | What happened in the US |
|---|---|
| Standalone Google Pay app | No longer available starting June 4, 2024. |
| In-store contactless payments and online checkout | Google said these uses continued through Google Wallet and Google Pay checkout. |
| Managing payment methods | Continued through Google Wallet. |
| Sending, requesting, or receiving money between people | The old US app’s person-to-person features ended; Google Wallet did not take them over. |
| Money remaining in a Google Pay balance | Google says it remains accessible for transfer, even after the later removal of the virtual Balance Card. |
How to transfer a remaining Google Pay balance
Google’s current help guidance says you can transfer remaining funds to a linked bank account or debit card, and that there is currently no deadline to withdraw them. The virtual Google Pay Balance Card was removed as a payment method on June 22, 2026; that change did not remove the underlying balance or affect other cards in Google Wallet. Follow Google’s current instructions if the labels differ in your app.
In Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet and go to the balance or profile controls.
- Choose Transfer out.
- Select a linked bank account or debit card and complete the transfer prompts.
On the web
- Go to wallet.google.com and open Payment Methods.
- Select Money in Google Pay or Google Pay balance.
- Choose Transfer out, enter the amount, and select a bank account. Add one if needed.
Google Wallet can show the real-time available balance. Google also provides complete transaction history and downloadable monthly records through the web profile. For a disputed or unauthorized balance transaction, use Google’s customer service and error-resolution process.

Can Google Wallet send money to friends?
No—the discontinued US Google Pay app’s person-to-person send, request, and receive features did not become Google Wallet features. A Google Wallet Community answer points to Zelle and Venmo as third-party options, but it does not establish their eligibility rules, fees, delivery times, limits, or protections. Check each service’s official terms before choosing one.
Compare the options based on whether both people are eligible and can access the service, how payments are funded and withdrawn, delivery timing, fees and limits, recipient verification, and how to report an incorrect or unauthorized transfer. Do not assume that a service’s terms or availability match the old Google Pay feature.
