Chromium’s official flag metadata includes a feature called “Vids app preinstall,” described as: “Preinstalls the Vids app on ChromeOS.” That confirms ChromeOS development includes a Vids preinstall capability—not that Google has enabled it for everyone or started shipping it on Chromebooks. What the Vids preinstall flag does—and doesn’t—confirm
A ChromeOS flag records a software feature or configuration option. In this case, the official Chromium entry names “Vids app preinstall” and says it preinstalls Vids on ChromeOS. It is evidence that the capability exists in development metadata, not proof that the feature is active in a stable ChromeOS release.
The entry does not announce a rollout or identify Chromebook models, regions, user accounts, or whether the app can be removed. It also does not say whether managed school devices will be treated differently from personal Chromebooks. Until Google or ChromeOS publishes rollout details, “Vids is coming preinstalled on Chromebooks” is more certain than the available evidence allows.
What Google Vids is, and who can access it
Google describes Vids as a collaborative video creation app. Its availability through Google Workspace for Education is separate from whether ChromeOS preinstalls the app.

Education access announcements
- On January 22, 2025, Google said Vids was available to Education Plus and Gemini Education customers and integrated with Google Classroom. The announcement described using it to assign video projects and post explainers. Google for Education, January 22, 2025
- On June 30, 2025, Google announced expanded basic Vids access for all Google Workspace for Education users. It cited instructional videos, student video book reports, and assignments as examples. Google had earlier announced that a version of Vids without generative AI was planned for Education Plus students and educators later in 2024. That was a historical plan announced on June 24, 2024, not a current eligibility rule. Google for Education, June 24, 2024
Does preinstallation change Workspace access or AI features?
No such change is established by the flag. Preinstalling an app on ChromeOS and granting access to features through a Google Workspace account are different matters. The flag description says nothing about licensing, account eligibility, or which Vids features a user can use. The Education access announcements describe Workspace availability, but do not say that Vids is installed on Chromebooks.

What Chromebook users should watch for
To know whether the feature has reached users, look for an official stable ChromeOS release note or Google announcement that states rollout timing and scope. The current flag entry does not provide those details, so it cannot establish when Vids will appear, which devices will receive it, or whether users can uninstall it.
