If cannabis is making you anxious or paranoid, stop using it, move to a safe place, and ask a trusted sober person to stay with you if possible. Avoid alcohol, other drugs, and driving. If symptoms are severe, the amount or product is unknown, or you are unsure what to do, contact a healthcare professional or poison center; call emergency services for an emergency.
What to do right now
- Stop taking cannabis. Do not take more to try to change how you feel.
- Get somewhere safe. Sit or lie down in a calm place, away from hazards. Do not drive or operate equipment.
- Ask someone sober to stay nearby. A trusted person can offer reassurance and help you seek care if symptoms worsen.
- Avoid alcohol and other drugs. Combining substances can increase impairment.
- Try slow, calming breathing and supportive conversation. These are general anxiety coping suggestions from the NHS, not a cannabis-specific treatment or antidote.
- Get advice if you may have used too much or are uncertain. Contact a local poison center or healthcare professional. In the United States, the CDC lists Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Call 911 for an emergency. Outside the US, use your local poison center and emergency number.
When to seek urgent help
Cannabis can cause disorientation and unpleasant anxiety or paranoia. The CDC also lists extreme confusion, panic, a fast heart rate, hallucinations or delusions, and severe nausea or vomiting among possible signs of using too much cannabis. If symptoms are severe or concerning, seek urgent medical advice; call emergency services if it is an emergency. Do not try to diagnose the cause or decide remotely that the reaction is harmless.
If the person is difficult to keep safe, their symptoms are escalating, or you cannot tell what or how much they took, contact a poison center or healthcare professional promptly. In the US, the CDC advises calling 911 in an emergency and Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for poisoning concerns. Elsewhere, contact the local equivalents.
Why edibles can make the situation harder to judge
Edible cannabis may take 30 minutes to 2 hours to produce intoxicating effects, can last longer than expected, and can be unpredictable, according to the CDC’s cannabis poisoning guidance. Effects can vary with factors such as amount, food, medicines, or alcohol. Taking more before the first dose has taken effect can contribute to overconsumption. Do not redose while waiting for effects or rely on a home remedy to make intoxication pass faster.

Consider avoiding cannabis
NHS Inform advises people who are prone to anxiety or have existing mental health problems to avoid cannabis, which can worsen anxiety and paranoia for some people. If distress persists or episodes recur, discuss them with a healthcare professional rather than assuming one episode establishes a diagnosis.

If you use cannabis despite the risks
- Use a very small dose and increase cautiously, allowing time for the previous dose to take effect or wear off.
- With edibles, NHS Inform advises waiting at least a couple of hours before taking more. The CDC notes that onset may take 30 minutes to 2 hours, so taking another serving too soon can make the total effect difficult to judge.
- Do not combine cannabis with alcohol or other drugs, and do not drive after using it.
