They describe the kinds of jobs agents tend to do, not a required checklist for every team. When you watch a match, use the roles to understand how a lineup might take space, shape sightlines, gather information or defend an area—and then look at how the players combine those abilities.
What do the four VALORANT agent roles do?
Riot groups agents by functionality. These summaries are a starting point: individual agents can contribute in more than one way, and a role label does not describe every ability in a kit.
Duelist: lead engagements
Duelists are built to take the lead in opening engagements. In a round, watch for them to make the first move into contested space or take an early fight while teammates support the play.
Controller: shape sightlines and access
Controllers influence where players can see and move. Tools such as vision-blocking smokes and temporary walls can obscure sightlines or help a team approach an area. Their value often comes from changing the conditions under which a fight happens, rather than simply taking it first.

Sentinel: defend and support
Sentinels bring defensive and supportive tools. Their abilities can help a team hold areas, protect a position or support teammates as the round develops.
Initiator: find or disrupt opponents
Initiators use tools to track, disable or flush out enemies, creating opportunities for teammates to act. Look for the information or disruption they provide just before teammates enter or challenge an area.

Riot’s Beginner’s Guide describes agents’ skills as “designed to work alongside each other toward a win.” That interaction is why an agent’s contribution can matter even when they are not the player getting the elimination.
How does a VALORANT team composition work?
A team fields five agents, but Riot says it is not mandatory to include one agent from every role. A lineup with varied agents and clear duties can give players complementary ways to contribute; it is guidance for building a team, not a guarantee of winning.

When comparing lineups, consider what the agents can do together and what a team gives up by specializing. Riot’s official beginner guidance recommends considering map features and agent playstyle, and explains that agents’ skills are designed to work alongside one another.
- Map and geometry: Sightlines, approaches, elevation and the areas a team needs to influence can favor different tools. A lineup that can obscure one route, for example, may still need a way to contest another.
- Team plan and timing: Ask whether abilities help the team enter an area, control space, gather information, defend or support a later objective. The order in which abilities and player moves happen can be as important as the role labels.
- Coordination and flexibility: Information and abilities are most useful when teammates can act on them together. A lineup built around one specialty may gain strength in that plan while giving up options elsewhere.
There is no universally best composition established by the role labels alone. Riot’s historical discussion of Controller design illustrates why: agents in the same role can have different strengths and weaknesses, and balance changes aim to preserve meaningful choices. What should a new viewer watch for during a round?
- Notice who creates the opening. Watch which player takes the first contested space or engagement, and whether teammates help make that move possible.
- Track how sightlines change. Pay attention to smokes or walls that block vision, and consider which approaches those tools make safer or harder to read.
- Look for information before a commitment. An Initiator’s tracking or disruption may reveal or displace opponents so teammates can make a better-informed move.
- Watch what the team protects. Defensive and supportive abilities can help hold an area or give teammates time to respond, even when the Sentinel is not near the action.
- Connect abilities to the plan. Ask what the lineup is trying to enter, control or defend, and whether its players use information and utility in a coordinated sequence.
Communication helps make that coordination possible. Riot’s beginner guide points to voice, pings and in-game voice lines as ways teammates can share enemy information and coordinate.

The four roles are Riot’s broad functional categories, not a live ranking of agents or tournament compositions. Riot’s March 2024 State of the Agents article discusses role diversity as an ongoing balance focus, but it is historical commentary, not current tournament pick-rate evidence. Riot’s Agents page lists the roster; its accessible text does not provide role assignments. For current competitive trends, a viewer needs evidence tied to a specific patch and tournament rather than an old role guide or a general roster list.
