Review your public posts and profiles for audio, limit future public voice recordings where practical, and agree with family on a way to verify urgent calls. If a caller sounds like someone you know and asks for money, hang up and call them back on a number you already have.
Can someone clone your voice from a video online?
Yes. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers may use a short online clip of a loved one’s voice with voice-cloning software to make a convincing impersonation call. A familiar voice alone is not proof of who is calling. The FTC’s consumer alert recommends verifying the story independently.
How to reduce avoidable exposure of your voice
Review what is public
Check public social profiles, videos, posts, and other content where your voice can be heard. Consider changing the audience for a recording, removing a post, or taking down audio you no longer want publicly accessible. These steps can reduce exposure, but they cannot ensure that downloaded or reposted copies are erased.
Choose what to share going forward
Where it suits you, limit future public recordings that include your voice. You do not need to stop speaking publicly or assume your voice has already been cloned; this is a practical way to reduce avoidable exposure, not a guarantee against impersonation.

What to do if a family member calls asking for money
The FTC’s advice is direct: “Don’t trust the voice.” If a caller claims to be a relative in trouble, pause before sending money and verify the claim through a separate channel.
- End the call. Do not let urgency or pressure keep you on the line.
- Call the person back using a number you already know. Use a saved contact or another familiar number, not a number supplied by the caller.
- If you cannot reach them, check with another trusted relative or friend. Ask them to confirm the person’s situation independently.
- Do not send money until you have verified the story. Requests for wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards are warning signs identified by the FTC.
Agreeing on this routine with family ahead of time can make it easier to act calmly during a stressful call. Do not rely on your ability to identify a clone by listening: the FTC’s consumer advice emphasizes independent verification.

How much audio does someone need to clone a voice?
There is no universal minimum established by the cited sources. An abstract for a 2024 FTC Voice Cloning Challenge proposal, “Liveness Detection for Audio Deepfake and Voice Clone Detection,” claims that technology can use three seconds of a person’s voice to create a deepfake. That is the proposal’s claim, not a general threshold verified for every system. The same abstract says its training data involved more than 120 text-to-speech and voice-cloning systems; that figure describes the proposal’s data, not market-wide coverage. Read the proposal abstract.

No single approach is established as a complete protection for consumers. In its April 2024 overview, the FTC groups possible interventions by when they act and what they attempt to do. It says, “There is no single solution.” The approaches below are areas of technical work, not a recommendation of a dependable consumer product that protects all audio already online. The FTC’s overview of approaches discusses these possibilities and their limitations.

| Approach | When it acts | What it may do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduce or authenticate source audio | Before public release or as a recording is created | A speaker or publisher may limit exposure; watermarking may mark audio’s origin | A watermark may be altered or removed. Reducing access does not ensure copies already shared are gone. |
| Detection or monitoring | During a call or when audio is encountered | A device, service, or communications provider may try to flag suspicious audio | Detection can be wrong; a flag is not proof of identity, and absence of a flag does not authenticate a caller. |
| Review existing audio | After a recording exists | An algorithm may evaluate a clip for signs of generated or manipulated speech | False positives can cause harm, and the FTC does not establish a foolproof consumer test. |
The FTC Voice Cloning Challenge describes exploratory proposals related to prevention, monitoring, and evaluation; it does not establish that every proposed method is deployed or commercially available. See the FTC Voice Cloning Challenge. For a recipient facing a suspicious emergency call, the practical safeguard remains independent verification rather than a detector or a listener’s impression.
