WinRAR’s built-in Repair command is worth trying when a RAR archive reports a CRC error, but it cannot guarantee recovery. It has the best chance when the archive already contains a recovery record and the damage happened after the archive was created. Keep the original archive and, for a split archive, every volume; then repair and test a copy.
What a CRC error means
A message such as “CRC Failed in File Name. The File is Corrupt!” means WinRAR detected corrupt data in the archive. It does not, by itself, prove that every file is unrecoverable. WinRAR says the way to determine whether repair helps is to run its Repair command and test the result. WinRAR Support’s CRC error guidance states: “The only way to detect if the repair will help is to try to apply the repair command to the archive and test the results.”
Try WinRAR’s Repair command
- Preserve the source. Make a working copy of the damaged archive when practical, and leave the original unchanged. If it is a multi-volume archive, keep all parts together and available.
- Open the archive in WinRAR and use Repair. The exact interface labels and dialog options can vary by installed version; consult that version’s Help or interface rather than relying on an assumed click sequence.
- Test the repaired result. Use WinRAR’s test function or attempt to extract the files you need, and check whether the same CRC or corruption error remains. A repair attempt is not proof that all data were restored.
WinRAR’s guidance describes Repair as a way to find out whether recovery is possible, not as a guaranteed fix. The official material does not specify one universal output filename or a success rate.
Why repair may or may not work
An existing recovery record can help
A recovery record must have been included when the archive was created. It adds redundant information that may reconstruct data damaged later; it cannot be added after corruption to recreate information that is already missing. WinRAR says RAR 5.0 recovery records use Reed-Solomon codes. A larger record can restore a larger damaged area, while increasing archive size and repair time. WinRAR’s recovery-record FAQ notes that a RAR 5.0 recovery record can, depending on circumstances, be as large as the archive itself.

Damage during archive creation is different
WinRAR warns that a recovery record will not help if hardware problems caused corruption while the archive was being created. In that situation, the archive may have been damaged before the recovery information could protect it. If the storage device itself is failing, avoid unnecessary writes to it and consider qualified data-recovery help; that is a separate issue from repairing the archive.
Results depend on the damage
Whether Repair can recover usable data depends on the archive and how it became damaged. WinRAR does not publish a repair success rate in the cited guidance, so no percentage can reliably predict the outcome for a particular file.

If the archive has multiple volumes
Do not repair or extract a split archive as though one volume were the whole set. Keep every volume together. If WinRAR reports “Packed Data CRC Failed in Volume Name,” the named volume is a clue to where the problem lies. WinRAR notes that this message may be displayed or skipped depending on archive details. Its CRC guidance covers the error; preserve the complete set while investigating the affected part.
Set recovery records on future archives
Recovery records are a preventive option for archives you create in the future, not a repair setting for an already damaged file. WinRAR’s FAQ says 3–10% is generally sufficient and identifies 3% as the default. Keep WinRAR up to date
WinRAR’s release notice says version 7.23 was released June 30, 2026, and includes a security fix for a heap overflow in code responsible for reconstructing data from RAR5 recovery volumes. The notice says: “The new version resolves a heap overflow vulnerability in the code, responsible for reconstructing data from RAR5 recovery volumes.” Check WinRAR’s official release notes for the current version and obtain updates from WinRAR’s official source; release information can change.
