There is no single guaranteed number of years that every iPhone receives iOS updates. Support depends on the model: Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide, checked October 7, 2026, lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), for the latest major iOS version. A phone that cannot install the newest iOS may still receive updates for an older iOS branch, so check the device and Apple’s release records before deciding it is unsupported.
What does “iOS updates” mean?
It can mean three different things: a new major iOS version, later releases within an older iOS branch, or security fixes. A model can stop qualifying for the newest major version without immediately losing every update. Apple’s compatibility list answers which models can install the current major version; its security release archive shows updates issued for both current and older branches.

Which iPhones can install iOS 27?
Apple’s compatibility guide, checked October 7, 2026, lists iPhone 11 and later and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) as compatible with iOS 27. This is the current major-version cutoff, not a prediction of when each model will stop receiving security updates. The list may change with future iOS releases. See Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide.
How to check whether your iPhone still gets updates
- Identify the model: Open Settings > General > About and find the model information.
- Check available software: Open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says this screen shows updates compatible with your device.
- Check major-version eligibility: Compare your model with Apple’s current compatibility guide if you want to know whether it can install the newest iOS.
- Check older-branch releases: Search Apple’s security release archive for updates that apply to your iPhone’s iOS branch. Install an update offered for your device.
Can an iPhone get security updates without the newest iOS?
Yes, that can happen. Apple’s release archive lists iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, released August 17, 2026, while iOS 27 is listed for iPhone 11 and later. The archive also lists iOS 27 and iOS 26.7 releases on September 14, 2026. These dated examples show that an older branch may receive a later update after a newer major iOS is available; they do not guarantee future releases for any particular phone.

Apple recommends installing the latest iOS available for your device to get the strongest security protections. In guidance published April 2, 2026, Apple said updated devices on iOS 15 through iOS 26 were protected against the web attacks discussed and noted that security updates were made available for older devices. Read Apple’s guidance on updating iOS to protect against web attacks. That advice is not a promise that every model will receive every future security fix.
When should you keep or replace an older iPhone?
Use the phone’s actual support and condition rather than its age alone. Consider these factors together:

- Security updates: Whether Apple is still offering updates for the iOS branch installed on the device.
- Apps and features: Whether the apps and functions you rely on continue to work as needed.
- Physical condition: Whether the phone remains usable and reliable for you.
A missing major iOS version by itself does not prove that security updates have ended. Apple’s published compatibility and release records do not establish a universal, guaranteed number of support years for every iPhone model.
