Believe them, make clear they are not to blame, and ask what would help right now. Offer to stay with them or help with reporting, documenting, or finding support—but let them decide what to do. Making an image, trusting someone, or being in a relationship does not mean consenting to its distribution.
What do I say to someone whose nudes were leaked?
Keep your first response calm and focused on the person, not on the image. You could say: “I’m sorry this happened. I believe you. You didn’t cause this. What would feel most helpful right now? I can stay with you, help report it, or find someone trained to support you.”
- Ask what they need in the next hour rather than trying to solve everything at once.
- Ask permission before taking practical steps, and accept it if they are not ready to report or preserve evidence.
- Do not ask why they made, sent, or trusted someone with the image. Do not demand to see it.
- Do not forward, repost, or show the image to someone else as proof.
If they are in immediate danger, prioritize getting them to a safe place and contacting local emergency help. Otherwise, offer options without taking control. The FBI’s sextortion guidance puts responsibility plainly: “You are not the one who is breaking the law.”
How can I help someone get intimate photos taken down?
With their permission, you can sit beside them while they record where the content appears and report each post to the service hosting it. A trusted friend can help document what happened and report it, according to RAINN. The person affected should remain in control of what is shared and which steps are taken.

Record useful details if they want to
If it feels safe, help them save the post URL, account name or username, date and time, any threats or payment demands, and records of earlier reports. Store those notes securely. Evidence can often be documented without copying or storing the intimate image itself; do not download or send it around. If the depicted person was under 18 when the image was made, avoid handling or redistributing the image and use the specialized service described below.
Report each post to the service where it appears
Use the platform’s own reporting route for every occurrence. Routes differ by service and may depend on having account access. RAINN maintains examples of reporting routes, but the platform’s current official instructions are the best guide for its process.

In the United States, FTC guidance says covered platforms must provide a way to request removal and remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a request. If a covered platform misses that deadline or has no working reporting process, the FTC accepts complaints through TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC complaint is an escalation route for platform non-compliance, not a direct takedown service or crisis support.

Hashing has limits. It only operates within participating services and their scanning scope. RAINN says most encrypted messaging services are not covered, and edited or AI-altered files may need separate hashes. Hashing an ordinary photo also cannot stop someone from making a new deepfake from it. Keep using platform reporting and offer support even if a hash case is created.
Should I report it to the police?
Do not pressure the person to contact police or report immediately. Ask what they want, explain available options, and help them find local specialist advice if they would like it. Laws, reporting processes, and platform duties differ by location, so do not assume that a rule in the United States or United Kingdom applies elsewhere.

United States
The FTC describes a 48-hour removal process for covered platforms after a request, including known identical copies, and accepts complaints when a platform fails to meet its obligations or lacks a working reporting process. These are U.S. requirements for covered platforms, not a universal deadline.
United Kingdom
A UK government factsheet updated 30 September 2026 describes Crime and Policing Act 2026 duties for regulated platforms to remove qualifying content within 48 hours of a valid report made by or on behalf of the person depicted. The duties apply only when the content meets the relevant offence definition and the report is valid; Ofcom oversees compliance. This is not a worldwide rule.

What if they’re being blackmailed?
Ask whether anyone is threatening them, demanding money or more images, or has access to their accounts or devices. If they want help, support them in preserving messages and reporting the account or content, provided doing so feels safe. Do not promise that paying will make them safe or that a threat will definitely be carried out.
The FBI warns that paying a person or business offering help for a fee or valuables may expose the victim to another attempt to exploit them. Be especially wary of paid “recovery” or “hacking” offers; do not suggest giving money, valuables, passwords, or more images to someone claiming they can erase everything.
Where can they get human support in the United States?
Offer contact details and let them choose whether to reach out themselves or have you stay with them while they do. Check the organizations’ current information and local eligibility when contacting them.
- National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), live chat at thehotline.org, or text “START” to 88788, as listed by the FTC.
- NCMEC: 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678), as listed by the FTC.
- RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline: RAINN describes this service as free, confidential, and available 24/7/365. It can provide information and support, but cannot remove images.
For people outside the United States, help them look for a trusted local specialist service or legal support rather than assuming these numbers or laws apply where they live.
