HomeKit Secure Video is a strong fit if you already use Apple Home and want camera recordings analyzed at home and encrypted end to end in iCloud. It requires an iCloud+ plan and a camera that specifically supports Secure Video. Google Nest and Ring offer different recording histories and app ecosystems, with features that depend on the camera, subscription, power source, and country. Compare the exact camera and plan—not just the brand.
What HomeKit Secure Video does
HomeKit Secure Video is a recording feature for compatible cameras added to Apple Home. A camera being labeled “HomeKit-enabled” does not automatically mean it supports Secure Video; check the exact model’s documentation and Apple’s compatibility information.
Apple says the home hub analyzes video to determine whether it should be recorded. Recordings are end-to-end encrypted in iCloud and do not count against the iCloud storage quota. Apple describes the process this way: “Recordings from security cameras that use HomeKit Secure Video are analyzed privately on your Apple devices at home and then sent securely to iCloud through end-to-end encryption.” Apple’s privacy features explain the architecture.
How many cameras and days of history HomeKit supports
An iCloud+ subscription is required to enable HomeKit Secure Video recording. The plan determines the number of cameras, while the Home app shows the last 10 days of activity. Apple Support’s HomeKit Secure Video guide lists these limits:

Whether iCloud+ is an additional cost depends on whether you already subscribe. These limits concern the camera count, not the amount of video that counts against iCloud storage.
How Google Nest and Ring differ
Google Nest: history varies by plan, camera, and power
Google says that, from October 1, 2025, Nest Aware (2nd gen) subscriptions purchased through Google are called Google Home Premium. Older subscriptions purchased through partners may retain the Nest Aware name. Standard provides 30 days of event history; Advanced provides 60 days of event history and 10 days of 24/7 video history on eligible cameras. See Google’s subscription and history details.

Recording options also depend on the camera. Some eligible battery models provide up to three hours of event video history without a subscription. Continuous recording has important power and model restrictions: for example, the Nest Cam (battery) must be connected to power for 24/7 history, while the battery Nest Doorbell does not offer 24/7 history even if optionally wired. Check Google’s camera history guide for the specific model.
Ring: plan and camera eligibility matter
Ring’s subscription plans include video storage and features, with 24/7 recording available for eligible cameras. Feature availability can vary by camera and location, so there is no single retention period or plan price that applies universally. Check the current Ring plan comparison for your country and camera before comparing ongoing costs.

Which system fits your needs?
- Choose HomeKit Secure Video if you use Apple Home, value Apple’s documented on-device analysis and end-to-end encrypted iCloud recordings, and can select a camera with explicit Secure Video support.
- Consider Google Nest if its app and devices fit your setup and the event or continuous-history option on the exact model meets your needs. Verify the subscription name and whether the camera needs external power for continuous recording.
- Consider Ring if its camera and app ecosystem suit you and the plan’s features are available for your model and location. Confirm the local terms rather than relying on a general retention claim.
There is no neutral, comparable performance study in the cited vendor documentation that establishes one system as universally more reliable or secure. A useful comparison is specific to your cameras and priorities:
- Privacy architecture: Apple documents local analysis at the home hub and end-to-end encrypted iCloud recordings. Evaluate Google and Ring using their own published practices; do not assume their architectures are equivalent.
- Recording mode: Distinguish event clips from continuous recording. Continuous recording may be limited by camera model or power source.
- Retention: Compare the number of days of event history and any continuous-history allowance, not just whether a subscription includes “video history.”
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact camera supports the recording feature you want, not merely the vendor’s broader smart-home platform.
- Total cost: Include any subscription you would add, whether it covers multiple devices, and whether it is already part of your household’s plan.
What you need to set up HomeKit Secure Video
You need an iCloud+ subscription, a camera specifically compatible with HomeKit Secure Video, and an Apple home hub. Apple identifies Apple TV 4K and HomePod as home hub devices; check Apple’s current home hub setup guidance for compatible devices and software requirements. Apple’s accessory catalog lists examples such as Logitech Circle View and Eve Outdoor Cam, but verify the exact model’s Secure Video support in both Apple’s listing and the camera maker’s documentation before buying.
