To update Chrome on a computer, open More > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates there; if one is ready, select Relaunch. The page also shows your installed version. On Android and iPhone or iPad, update Chrome through the official app store; on Linux, use your package manager, and on a Chromebook, update ChromeOS.

Update Chrome on Windows or Mac

  1. Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates and displays the installed version.
  3. If Chrome offers an update, select Relaunch to apply it.

Google says Chrome saves open tabs and windows and reopens them after relaunch. Incognito windows do not reopen. Chrome normally updates in the background after you close and reopen it, and GoogleUpdater regularly checks for and installs updates on Windows and macOS. Google describes GoogleUpdater as a service that helps keep Chrome up to date, including with security patches. Learn how Google says Chrome updates are managed. On Mac, Google also documents an option to enable automatic updates for all users when Chrome is installed in Applications.

For Google’s full computer update instructions and supported-system requirements, see Update Google Chrome — Computer. Requirements vary by operating system and processor and can change; check Google’s current list if an update is unavailable or your device may no longer be supported.

Update Chrome on other devices

Device Official update route How to confirm
Linux Use your Linux distribution’s package manager. Check the installed browser version in Chrome’s About page after updating.
Chromebook Update ChromeOS; Chrome is updated through the operating system. Check Chrome after the ChromeOS update.
Android In Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & device, find Chrome under available updates, then tap Update. Confirm the update in Play Store or open Chrome to check the installed version.
iPhone or iPad In the Apple App Store, open your profile, scroll to available updates, find Chrome, then tap Update. Confirm the update in the App Store or open Chrome to check the installed version.

Google says Android and iOS app updates may happen automatically depending on the relevant store settings. The retrieved Google help pages list Android 10 and later and iOS 17 and later as supported. See Google’s instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad.

Check whether Chrome is up to date

On Windows or Mac, open More > Help > About Google Chrome. The version number appears below the Google Chrome heading, and Chrome checks for updates while the page is open. Apply an offered update with Relaunch. Google Chrome Help says, “If you can’t find the ‘Relaunch’ option, you’re on the latest version.”

There is no single version number that stays current for every reader: releases and rollout timing can differ by platform and channel. Check your installed version and update status on the device you use rather than relying on a version number in a general guide.

Use Chrome Safety Check as a secondary check

On desktop, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Safety Check. Google says Safety Check can surface available updates as well as other security and privacy issues. For the explicit version number and update status, use the About Google Chrome page. Google’s Safety Check instructions.

What to do if Chrome will not update

  • Make sure you are using the update route for your platform: Chrome’s About page on Windows or Mac, your package manager on Linux, ChromeOS update on a Chromebook, or the official app store on mobile.
  • Check whether your operating system and processor meet Google’s current Chrome requirements. Unsupported systems may not receive current Chrome updates.
  • On Android or iPhone and iPad, check the relevant store’s update settings if automatic updates are not appearing.

Google’s cited help pages do not identify one fix that applies to every stalled or failed update. Avoid third-party “Chrome update” download sites and do not assume that deleting caches, reinstalling Chrome, or changing system settings is necessary. Use Google’s official updater or the device’s official update manager.

Choose the Stable channel for everyday browsing

Chrome has several release channels. Google describes Stable as fully tested and appropriate for most users. Beta and Dev are preview or testing channels, and Dev is not completely stable; Canary is intended for testing and is unstable for everyday use. Organizations may manage channels, including choosing Extended Stable for operational reasons, but that is an administrator decision rather than the consumer default.
