For Northern Hemisphere observers, autumn is the best season to see the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), with NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog naming November as the best observing month. Aim for a clear, dark night with little or no moonlight, let your eyes adapt, and use Cassiopeia or the Great Square of Pegasus to locate it. Under dark skies, M31 can look like a faint fuzzy patch to the naked eye; binoculars make its bright core and some of its broad disc easier to see.
When is the best time to see the Andromeda Galaxy?
Autumn is the practical season to look for M31 in the Northern Hemisphere. NASA’s October 2024 Night Sky Network guide says Andromeda becomes prominent as autumn arrives, and NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog identifies November as the best observing month. These are seasonal guides, not a fixed viewing hour: M31’s position and altitude change with date, latitude, twilight, and the local horizon. Check a current sky map or astronomy app for when it will be well placed where you are.
A date-specific example illustrates why local checks matter: Space.com’s October 2026 monthly guide says that on October 15 the Moon is expected to set around 9 p.m. EDT (0100 GMT on October 16), opening a darker late-night window. Its guidance to look high in the northeastern sky applies to that date and observing context; do not reuse those times for another night.
What conditions make M31 easier to see?
Choose a dark, moonless window
Moonlight and artificial skyglow reduce contrast, making M31’s faint outer glow harder to distinguish. Prefer a time when the Moon is absent or has set, and if possible observe from a darker location away from city lights. Looking away from the direction of city glow can also help. NASA recommends checking the local Moon phase and rise and set times, as well as considering local sky brightness.

- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
Look for clear, transparent air
Thin cloud, smoke, and haze can wash out faint detail even when the sky seems mostly clear. Check the local forecast and smoke conditions, and choose a site with an unobstructed view in the direction M31 will be. If you are visiting an unfamiliar location, scout it in daylight and check that access is permitted and the site is safe.
Give your eyes time to adapt
NASA says dark adaptation takes approximately 30 minutes. Avoid bright phone screens, headlights, and white flashlights while observing; use a dim red light if you need to check a screen or move around. A red flashlight or headlamp is an optional aid, not a requirement.

How do you find the Andromeda Galaxy?
Start with either the Great Square of Pegasus or the distinctive W shape of Cassiopeia. NASA recommends both as guides; M31 lies near the border of Andromeda and Cassiopeia. For exact placement on a particular evening, check a current sky chart or application set to your location and date.
For October 15, 2026, Space.com’s monthly guide suggests looking high in the northeast and using the right side of Cassiopeia’s W as a downward-pointing guide, or hopping two stars up from Mirach in Andromeda. Those are date-specific pointers, not year-round directions. The galaxy itself looks like a diffuse patch rather than a point-like star, which can help distinguish it from nearby stars.

What will you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a telescope?
| Viewing method | What to expect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Naked eye | Under dark, clear skies, M31 may appear as a small, faint fuzzy patch. NASA says persistent observers may spot its core from moderately light-polluted areas when the sky is clear. | Most sensitive to moonlight, haze, and light pollution; do not expect a photographic spiral view. |
| Binoculars | The bright core stands out more clearly, and some of the broad, wispy disc may be visible. | A useful way to take in more of the extended galaxy; no particular magnification is established by the cited guidance. |
| Telescope | Can reveal more detail. | Its narrower field of view may not fit the whole galaxy at once. |
The galaxy is about 2.5 million light-years away, according to NASA’s Night Sky Network and Hubble Messier catalog. NASA’s 2024 Night Sky Network guide describes M31 as magnitude 3.4, while the Hubble catalog lists apparent magnitude 3.1; the pages differ, so neither figure should be treated as a single uncontested value.

You do not need equipment to start. Binoculars are optional if you want the core and part of the disc to stand out more. A printed star chart or planisphere can help you learn the constellations, while a dim red light helps preserve dark adaptation. For date-specific directions, a current digital sky map is useful.
