The documented AI Assistant for Writer extension offers correction, rewriting, and summarization of selected text, using either a local Ollama service or the OpenAI API. Its documentation lists LibreOffice 24.2 or newer and the LibreOffice Python scripting component as requirements. These are the extension publisher’s claims; check the current release instructions and package provenance before installing.
What the Writer extension does
The AI Assistant for Writer adds commands to Writer’s context menu. Select text, choose an action, review the generated result, and decide whether to replace the selection. Its documentation lists three actions:
- Correct: ask the configured model to fix selected text.
- Rewrite: request a different phrasing of the selection.
- Summarize: condense the selected passage.
This is an extension-based workflow, not a replacement editor: your document remains open in Writer, and the tool works on the text you select. The project describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. See the AI Assistant for Writer project page for its current package details and instructions.
Check requirements before installing
The extension documentation lists LibreOffice 24.2 or newer and the LibreOffice Python scripting component. Confirm both against the current package instructions before proceeding; compatibility and package details can change. The official LibreOffice Extension Manager help explains the general process for adding an extension package, but the AI features and provider setup are documented by the extension project, not endorsed or maintained by LibreOffice.

Install the OXT package
- Download the OXT package from the extension project’s page and check that it comes from the project source you intend to trust.
- Open LibreOffice and choose Tools > Extensions.
- Click Add, select the downloaded OXT file, and install it for your user account when prompted.
- Restart LibreOffice to load the extension.
The menu labels and steps above follow the project’s instructions and LibreOffice’s general Extension Manager guidance. If your version displays different labels or the package fails to install, consult the current project instructions and check the listed LibreOffice and Python requirements.
Choose where selected text is processed
The provider choice determines where the selected passage goes. The extension documentation describes a local Ollama route and a hosted OpenAI API route; “local” here depends on configuring an Ollama service running on your own computer rather than a remote endpoint.
| Route | Where text goes | What you need | Cost and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ollama on your computer | Selected text is sent to the Ollama service on your computer, if that is where you run it. The project also allows a remote Ollama endpoint, which would not keep processing on that computer. | Ollama, a downloaded model, and provider/model environment variables configured as the project specifies. | No hosted API charge is inherent to this route, but it uses your computer’s hardware and electricity. The project does not state minimum hardware or provide performance benchmarks. |
| OpenAI API | Selected text is transmitted to the OpenAI API. | An API key with API access, supplied using OPENAI_API_KEY; model and API base URL settings are optional according to the project page. |
API use may incur charges. A ChatGPT subscription and OpenAI API access or billing are separate. |
Set up the local Ollama route
Use this option if you want to run the model service on your own computer and can meet its hardware needs. The extension documentation names Ollama as its default provider and gives gemma4:e2b as an example model. Use the exact name of a model you have actually downloaded; the project says the configured model name must match.
- Install Ollama using its own current instructions, start the service, and download a model.
- Configure the extension’s provider and model environment variables as described on the project page. Its example local endpoint is
http://localhost:11434. - On Linux or macOS, the project says to export the variables in the terminal session from which you will start LibreOffice. On Windows, it instructs users to set user environment variables.
- Completely close LibreOffice, then restart it so the changed variables are available to the extension.
These are project-specific setup steps and may change between releases. The documentation does not establish a minimum computer specification or say how well a particular model will perform for your writing tasks, so choose a model and hardware based on your own requirements rather than treating the example as a performance recommendation.
Set up the OpenAI API route
Choose this route if you prefer a hosted model and have API access. According to the extension page, configure the provider as OpenAI, make an API key available through OPENAI_API_KEY, and optionally set the model and API base URL. Restart LibreOffice after changing environment variables. The project page returned by search named gpt-5-mini as its default model; defaults can change, so check the current project instructions rather than assuming that model remains the default.
API usage may be billed separately from ChatGPT. Check your API account’s access and billing arrangements before using it, and consider whether sending the selected passage to an external service is appropriate for the document.

Use an AI action in Writer
- Open a document in Writer and select the passage you want help with.
- Right-click the selection and open the AI Assistant submenu.
- Choose Correct, Rewrite, or Summarize.
- Review the generated result before accepting it in place of the original selection.
The extension says it presents the result for review before replacing the selection. Treat the output as a suggestion: check meaning, names, facts, and tone before accepting changes into your document.

With Ollama running on the same computer, the extension documentation says selected text goes to that local service. If you configure a remote Ollama endpoint, the text instead goes to that endpoint. With OpenAI, the selected passage is sent to the OpenAI API. The extension project documentation warns: “Do not send confidential information to an external provider unless its data handling policy is suitable for your use case.” This is the publisher’s warning, not an independent privacy audit.

Before using either route, check the destination configured in the extension and decide whether the content can be shared with that service. Local processing is not guaranteed merely by choosing a provider named Ollama.
Compare alternatives carefully
A separate community project, LibreOffice-AI-Plugin, documents an OXT integration with Ollama and LM Studio local options, as well as Gemini and Claude API options. Its maintainers describe installing through Extension Manager and choosing a provider in its settings. This is an alternative described by its maintainers, not a LibreOffice endorsement or an independently verified product comparison.
When assessing either extension, compare the details that affect your workflow and risk:
- Whether processing is local or hosted, and exactly where selected text is sent.
- Which providers are supported and how credentials are handled.
- Which Writer tasks are available and whether results can be reviewed before replacing text.
- LibreOffice version, Python scripting, or UNO prerequisites listed by the current package.
- Who maintains the extension, where its package comes from, what permissions it needs, and how updates are delivered.
- Provider charges and, for local models, the computer resources and electricity they require.
The available project documentation does not provide independent security audits or comparative quality benchmarks, so those should not be inferred from feature lists alone.
