Google has not published a special formula for choosing websites in AI Mode when someone searches for a brand. Its public guidance describes a broader process: AI Mode can search related subtopics, find supporting pages, and show links with its generated answer. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Google Search to qualify as a supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will show it.

How does Google AI Mode choose websites for a brand search?

Google says AI Mode can use “query fan-out”: it breaks a question into related subtopics and searches across multiple data sources. While generating an answer, its models can identify additional web pages that support the response. Google has not disclosed how that process specifically handles a brand name, or a fixed ranking order for the sites it selects. Google’s description of AI Mode and its AI-features guidance for website owners describe general behavior, not a brand-search ranking recipe.

Google’s general Search documentation identifies factors such as the meaning of the query, relevance, expertise and source quality, usability, location, and settings. Their relative importance varies by query. These are relevant context for understanding Search, not a confirmed list of AI Mode signals or their weights for branded searches. Google’s ranking overview does not publish a brand-specific formula.

The links are also part of a changing presentation. Depending on the query and product behavior, AI Mode may place links near relevant statements, show previews, suggest further exploration, or surface public discussions and firsthand perspectives. AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, so their links may differ. Google’s announcement about links in AI Mode describes these formats, but not a permanent layout or inclusion rule.

Why might AI Mode show a competitor for your brand?

A branded query can involve more than finding the company’s home page. The person may be asking about a product, location, price, review, support issue, or comparison. AI Mode’s related searches may therefore lead it to pages from other publishers, business listings, or public discussions that it considers useful to the answer. That is a practical interpretation of Google’s query-fan-out description, not a disclosed explanation for any particular result.

Google also says AI Mode can misinterpret content or miss context. A competitor appearing in one answer does not establish that Google has permanently ranked that site above the brand’s website, nor does it reveal the system’s internal reasoning. Google’s AI-features documentation cautions that results and links can vary.

What makes a website eligible to be a supporting link?

Google’s stated baseline is that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Technical eligibility is not a promise of crawling, indexing, or serving: Google explicitly warns that meeting requirements and best practices does not guarantee any of those outcomes. Its guidance says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google does not say that a brand name, a particular schema type, a fixed number of links, or a special AI file guarantees inclusion. Structured data should accurately match the visible page; it is not a shortcut to an AI Mode link. Google also says no special AI schema or new machine-readable format is required. The AI-features guidance explains these requirements and limitations.

How can you improve the chances that your site is useful and eligible?

These steps address Search accessibility and content quality. They cannot ensure that AI Mode will select or display a page.

  1. Check crawlability and indexing. Make important pages accessible to Google and eligible for snippets. Use Google Search Console to investigate indexing or technical problems. Eligibility is necessary for a supporting AI link, but does not guarantee one. Google’s AI-features documentation explains the baseline.
  2. Make key information easy to find and read. Put essential details in text, connect important pages with clear internal links, and use useful images or video when they help visitors. These are among Google’s recommendations for site owners. See Google’s guidance for AI features.
  3. Answer the real question behind the brand search. Publish original, accurate, helpful information for visitors, with clear authorship where appropriate. Google’s people-first content guidance says E-E-A-T itself is not a specific ranking factor, though systems use a mix of factors to identify content with good E-E-A-T. Read Google’s guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content.
  4. Keep business information current where relevant. If the business uses Google Merchant Center or a Business Profile, keep the information there accurate as well. Google lists these as relevant site-owner considerations.
  5. Measure what Search Console reports. Google says appearances in AI features are included in Web search performance reporting. Its June 3, 2026 post, updated August 31, 2026, also describes reporting on AI-feature appearances, pages, and countries. Treat these as reporting data, not as a promise of future inclusion. Google’s Search Console update describes the reporting and controls.

Google’s August 31, 2026 update says Search Console controls for managing whether content appears in generative AI Search features had rolled out worldwide by that date. Google states these controls are not a ranking signal for Search results outside those features. Review the current settings and official documentation before changing access. Read Google’s update on AI-feature controls.

How to check what AI Mode shows for a brand

There is no official checklist that predicts every site AI Mode will show for a brand query. For a useful comparison over time, record the conditions rather than treating one answer as a stable ranking.

  • Exact query wording and the date of the search.
  • Country or locale, device, and interface used.
  • Whether the search was signed in or personalized, where known.
  • The linked pages and domains, and whether links appeared inline, in a carousel, or in another format.
  • Changes across repeated checks, keeping direct observations separate from assumptions about Google’s internal process.

This method reflects Google’s statements that query meaning and user context matter in Search generally, and that AI Mode’s output and links can vary. Google’s ranking overview and AI-features documentation explain those limits.

Can users make a source more prominent?

Google’s Preferred Sources feature lets users choose sites they want highlighted in AI Mode and AI Overviews. It is a user-selected preference, not a way for a brand to make its own site universally preferred. In its May 27, 2026 announcement, Google said users were twice as likely to click a Preferred Source and had selected more than 345,000 unique sources; those are Google-reported figures, not a guarantee of results for any site. Google’s Preferred Sources announcement explains the feature.
