First, identify where the update stopped: in Garmin Connect, in Garmin Express on your computer, or on the watch during installation. The fix depends on that stage. A stalled download usually calls for app, computer, or network checks; an Express “Preparing” screen may still be working; and a watch that appears frozen during installation needs model-specific guidance.
Identify where the update is stuck
Check which screen or app stopped progressing and note the exact error message. Garmin says a download stall in Garmin Express can look like no visible progress, a frozen screen, or a progress bar that moves backward. Those symptoms are different from a Garmin Connect sync error or an installation that has stopped on the watch.
- Garmin Express download: Progress stops or reverses on the computer.
- Garmin Express “Preparing”: The app appears stationary while preparing the update.
- Garmin Connect: Sync fails, sometimes with a specific not-enough-space message.
- Watch installation: The watch itself appears stuck while installing.
If a Garmin Express download is stalled
Check the computer and connection before assuming the watch is at fault. Garmin recommends updating Garmin Express, confirming that the computer has enough free disk space, and using a reliable high-speed internet connection. Garmin’s download and installation troubleshooting also identifies weak Wi-Fi, internet restrictions, computer sleep, VPN or proxy settings, an incorrect computer date, time or time zone, and another application accessing the device as possible causes.
- Update Garmin Express to the current version.
- Check that the computer has free storage and a stable internet connection.
- Check whether the computer slept, a VPN or proxy is interfering, or another app is accessing the watch.
- Restart the computer, reopen Garmin Express, and retry the download.
- If the stall continues, follow Garmin’s advanced network troubleshooting steps.
If Garmin Express is stuck on “Preparing”
Do not treat the unchanged display alone as proof that the update has frozen. Garmin says the Express interface may not refresh even while the application continues working in the background. Garmin’s “Preparing” troubleshooting guidance recommends trying the following steps:

If Garmin Connect reports a storage error
If Garmin Connect on iOS shows “Sync Failed FileTransferError notEnoughSpace”, Garmin’s guidance for that specific error says the watch does not have enough space for the update and recommends updating through Garmin Express on a computer. Garmin documents this advice on its Forerunner 35 storage-error page; do not assume every sync failure has the same cause.
If Garmin Connect shows a generic “Sync Failed” message
For a generic sync failure, Garmin recommends waiting a few minutes and trying again. If the problem persists, sync with Garmin Express on a computer; Express may identify files it cannot upload. See Garmin’s sync-failure guidance.

Update through Garmin Express
Garmin Express is an alternative update route for supported watches. You need a USB charging/data cable that is compatible with your exact watch model; Garmin’s general instructions do not specify one connector for every watch. Confirm compatibility in the product documentation or Garmin Support before using or buying a cable.
- Connect the watch to the computer with its compatible USB charging/data cable.
- Open Garmin Express, select the watch, and choose the available update.
- Follow Garmin Express’s prompts to transfer the update.
- Disconnect the watch and accept its on-screen installation prompt.
On models that offer the menu, an update may also be available on the watch under Settings > System > Software Update > Update Available. Menu availability varies by model. Garmin’s general Express update instructions direct users to the Support Center for product-specific software instructions.
