To increase Google Drive storage, either free space in your Google Account or buy more through Google One. For a personal account, Drive storage is shared with Gmail and Google Photos—not reserved for Drive alone—so check which service is using space before deciding. Google accounts include up to 15 GB at no charge; Google One plans start with 100 GB, though availability and prices depend on your location and account. Google explains how storage is shared.
Choose the right way to get more space

Check what is using your Google storage
Google Account storage is shared across Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. A full account may be caused by large email attachments or photos rather than Drive files. Use Google’s storage management guidance to review usage and find large items before deleting anything.
Files shared with you generally count against the owner’s storage, not yours. However, a copy you make or a file you add to a shared folder counts against your own quota. Google’s shared-file storage explanation describes how ownership affects the quota.
How to buy more Google Drive storage
For a personal account, the consumer upgrade route is Google One. The added space applies to Drive, Gmail, and Photos together, so it is not a Drive-only pool. Review the plan and price shown for your country and account before subscribing; Google says storage purchases are available only in some countries.

- Sign in to the Google Account you want to expand, then open Google One.
- Select Upgrade.
- Choose a storage limit, then review the displayed price and payment date.
- Subscribe if the plan and billing terms suit you.
Google One subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Google’s purchase and upgrade guidance notes that an upgrade can take up to 24 hours to become active. If the new storage does not appear after that, check that you purchased on the intended account and review the payment status.
Free up space without buying a plan
Deleting unwanted files or messages can restore space, but deleting alone may not immediately reduce the displayed usage. Empty the relevant trash or bin after you are sure you no longer need the contents. If you need to keep a file, download it to your computer or another local storage device before removing the cloud copy. Existing computer storage may be enough; an external drive is an optional archive destination, not an increase to your Google cloud quota.

Find large Drive files
Open the Drive storage view to identify large files, then delete only items you no longer need. If you want to retain a file, download it first. Empty Drive trash when ready to reclaim the space.
Find large Gmail messages
In Gmail, search for has:attachment larger:10M to find messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. Review the results, delete messages you do not need, and empty Gmail Trash and Spam if the goal is to recover space.

Review Google Photos and WhatsApp backups
Review large or unwanted items in Photos as well as Drive and Gmail, since all three services use the shared quota. Android WhatsApp backups also count toward Google Account storage. Do not delete a WhatsApp backup unless you accept the risk: Google warns that deletion is permanent and chat history may be lost if you change phones or reinstall WhatsApp before making a new backup. To keep videos out of future backups, change WhatsApp’s backup settings first. Google’s storage guidance covers WhatsApp backups.
If you use a work or school account
The personal Google One purchase process may not apply to an organization account. Google says work and school users cannot buy additional storage for themselves through the consumer flow. Contact your account administrator to ask about available capacity or an organizational plan; the amount depends on the organization’s edition and administrative settings. Fix storage that does not update
Deleted files but the account still looks full
Empty the applicable trash or bin, then allow time for the storage display to refresh. Google says to try advanced cleanup if the account still appears full after 30 minutes; large deletions can take longer to show in available space. See Google’s storage troubleshooting steps.
Purchased a plan but do not see the extra space
Confirm you upgraded the Google Account you are checking and allow up to 24 hours for activation. If it still has not appeared, check payment status using Google’s upgrade troubleshooting guidance.

Drive for desktop shows a different amount
Your computer’s disk space and Google Account cloud storage are separate. Synced files can occupy local disk space, while only files owned by your account count toward its Google cloud storage. Google’s storage help page distinguishes account storage from local device space.
The account remains over quota
Being over quota does not mean content is deleted immediately. Google’s policy says it may delete content across Gmail, Drive, and Photos if an account remains over its limit for two years. See Google’s storage policy guidance.
