Adobe Firefly and Runway Gen-4.5 are the clearest documented alternatives to Google Flow, but neither is a universal replacement. Firefly suits creators who want to compare video models and edit in one workspace; Runway is a candidate for text-to-video or image-to-video clips with defined duration and credit costs. Choose based on the work you need to do—reference-driven shots, scene continuity, audio, editing, or commercial use—not on an unsupported overall quality ranking.
What Google Flow does—and what an alternative needs to replace
Flow is an AI filmmaking workspace built around Google’s Veo models, with Imagen and Gemini capabilities supporting the workflow. Google describes camera controls, asset management, and Scenebuilder, so Flow is more than a prompt box for generating isolated clips. See Google’s Flow launch announcement.
Google’s October 2025 Veo 3.1 update described reference-driven generation with Ingredients to Video and Frames to Video, extending a clip, and adding objects. The announcement said object removal was coming soon at that time; it should not be read as confirmation of present availability. The same update reported more than 275 million videos generated in Flow, including Veo 2 and Veo 3 generations, as of the announcement—not a current cumulative total. Read Google’s update.
Flow’s available features and credit costs depend on the active model and can change. Google advises users to check the selected model, resolution, and credit cost in the interface before generating. Its Help pages cover Flow’s supported features and credits and generation limits.

For a fair comparison, match the workflow: reference images and frame control, maintaining a scene across clips, editing and extension, audio generation, output options, cost mechanics, and rights for the specific model. No named independent benchmark in the available sources establishes one tool as the best overall for output quality.

Adobe Firefly: the strongest fit for a multi-model editing workflow
Firefly is a logical option if you want to generate video and keep refining it in the same creative workspace. Adobe describes text-to-video and image-to-video, trimming and reordering clips, swapping models, regenerating or extending segments, and exporting. Its workspace also offers voiceover, music, and sound effects, which should be distinguished from audio generated natively by a video model.

Check commercial-use terms model by model
Adobe says content generated with its own Firefly Video Model is designed to be safe for commercial use. That statement does not automatically cover partner-model outputs. Adobe says commercial-use eligibility depends on the selected model, and partner models may have different terms. Confirm the applicable terms for the exact model and intended use before publishing client or commercial work.

Runway Gen-4.5: a clearly specified text- and image-to-video option
Runway’s Help documentation lists Gen-4.5 for both text-to-video and image-to-video, with 2–10 second durations and a cost of 12 credits per second. It also describes support for detailed prompts that sequence actions, camera choreography, scene composition, event timing, and atmospheric changes. The cited documentation says Gen-4.5 requires a Standard plan or higher. See Runway’s Gen-4.5 documentation.
The 12-credits-per-second figure is a generation cost, not the total price of using Runway: it does not, by itself, tell you the subscription cost, included monthly credits, or what a particular project will consume. Check the current plan and credit information in Runway before budgeting a project.

Other tools to consider when widening the shortlist
Kling, Luma, Pika, Hailuo, and Vidu are additional candidates surfaced in a secondary comparison. That comparison’s commercial details were checked on July 11, 2026, and can change; treat it as a starting point for discovery, not authority for current prices or feature availability. Verify any specific capability, plan, or cost on the vendor’s official site before choosing. The available evidence does not support ranking these tools against Flow or one another.
Which AI video generator should you use instead of Google Flow?
- Choose Firefly if keeping generation, model selection, and editing together matters most, and you are prepared to check rights for the model you select.
- Consider Runway Gen-4.5 if text-to-video or image-to-video is the core task and you want documented clip-duration and per-second credit information.
- Keep Flow in the comparison if its camera, reference, and scene-building tools are central to your process. Google announced native 9:16 video for Ingredients to Video and 1080p/4K upscaling in Flow, Gemini API, and Vertex AI in January 2026. Those upscaling options apply to the named services; do not assume they are available across every Google video product. Read Google’s January 2026 announcement.
- Expand the shortlist to Kling, Luma, Pika, Hailuo, or Vidu if neither documented option matches your workflow, but confirm current features and terms directly with each provider.
How to compare before committing
- Define the shot workflow. Note whether you need a text prompt, an image reference, control over first or last frames, camera movement, object changes, or extension of an existing clip.
- Check continuity and editing. Determine whether the tool can carry characters or settings across generations and whether you can trim, reorder, or continue scenes in the workspace.
- Separate generated audio from editing tools. Verify whether dialogue, ambience, and effects come from the video model itself or are added as voiceover, music, or sound effects in a separate editing step.
- Confirm output settings in the chosen model and plan. Check aspect ratio, duration, resolution, export format, and watermarking; these can differ by model and subscription.
- Calculate the actual generation budget. Compare included allowances and credits with the number, duration, and resolution of outputs you expect. A per-second credit figure is not interchangeable with a monthly plan price.
- Verify rights for the exact model. Read the terms for the selected model and use case, especially when working with a partner model inside a larger platform.
What published figures do—and do not—tell you
Google’s May 20, 2025 Flow launch announcement described 100 generations per month on Google AI Pro at launch. That is a launch-time plan detail, not a verified current allowance. Google also reported more than 275 million Flow videos generated in its October 15, 2025 announcement; that total included Veo 2 and Veo 3 generations and applies as of that announcement. Neither figure establishes present plan value or comparative output quality. Google AI Pro and Flow launch details.
Likewise, Adobe’s December 2025 announcement of Gen-4.5 access in Firefly and on Runway’s platform is historical. Any early access or temporary plan terms described then should not be treated as a current offer. Read Adobe’s announcement.
