To set up a new Pixel, copy data directly from your old Android phone during setup if you still have it; otherwise, restore an available Google Account backup. Before you begin, back up the old phone and any app-specific content, such as WhatsApp chats. Photos and contacts may sync separately from the device backup, and not every app or item can be restored.
Google’s setup and transfer instructions can vary by Pixel generation, Android version, and country or carrier. The steps below reflect Google Pixel Help guidance available as of October 7, 2026.
Choose the right transfer path
| Situation | Path | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You have the old Android phone and it works | Copy data during Pixel setup | Use the Pixel’s on-screen transfer flow. Depending on the devices, you can connect wirelessly or with a compatible cable. |
| You do not have the old phone | Restore a Google Account backup | Sign in to the same Google Account used on the old device and select an available backup. |
| You already finished setup | Use Android Switch on Pixel 9 and later, or check for a setup prompt on an earlier Pixel | Google documents post-setup Android Switch for Pixel 9 and later. Options on earlier devices are more limited. |
Neither route guarantees an exact clone. The result depends on what was backed up, what each app supports, and which transfer features your devices offer.
Prepare the old phone and new Pixel

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro XL; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Back up the old phone and confirm it is using the Google Account you plan to use on the Pixel.
- Back up app-specific content inside the app when needed. Google specifically calls out WhatsApp chat history as an example; a device backup may not include it.
- Charge both phones, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, and keep the old phone’s screen-lock PIN handy.
- Have a compatible USB-C cable available if Wi-Fi is unreliable or you prefer a wired transfer. Check the ports on both phones and whether an adapter is needed; a cable is optional.
- Plan for SIM or eSIM setup during onboarding. Google’s preparation guidance says Pixel 10 and later phones in the United States do not have a physical SIM slot; this detail is specific to that generation and region.
For more preparation details, see Google’s guide to setting up a Pixel.
Copy data directly from an available Android phone
- Start the new Pixel. Follow the setup prompts until you reach the option to copy apps and data, then choose the Android or Pixel transfer option shown on screen.
- Connect the phones. Use the wireless pairing method offered by the Pixel; on supported newer Pixels, this may involve scanning a QR code with the old phone. You can also connect the phones with a compatible cable if that option is offered.
- Unlock the old phone and approve the transfer. Follow its prompts, enter its screen-lock PIN if requested, and select the categories of data you want to copy.
- Keep the phones connected and let the process finish. For a wireless transfer, keep the devices close together and charged. Apps may continue downloading after the transfer screen completes, so allow time for them to install.
Google lists texts and attachments, photos and videos, contacts, calendars, files, and apps among the items that can transfer. App transfer applies to apps downloaded or purchased through Google Play; manufacturer-specific app data and content that an app does not back up may not come across. The exact categories and results depend on the phones and apps. See Google’s Pixel setup instructions and its guide to copying data to a new Pixel for the prompts applicable to your devices.

Restore from a Google Account backup if the old phone is unavailable
- Turn on the Pixel and connect it to Wi-Fi during setup.
- When prompted to connect to or copy from another device, choose the option to skip that step.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used on the old phone.
- Choose the backup Google offers and follow the restore prompts.
A backup must exist and be available to select. Not every app supports backup and restore; Google states, “Not all apps can be backed up or restored.” Check Google’s instructions for restoring data on a Pixel for details about the backup options.
Transfer data after Pixel setup is complete
Pixel 9 and later
Google documents an Android Switch option in Settings for transferring data after initial setup on Pixel 9 and later. This path allows one previous device to be restored. To transfer from a different previous device instead, Google says you must reset the Pixel first. Follow the Android Switch prompts shown in Settings; menu labels can vary with software version.

Earlier Pixel models
Check for a “Finish setup” notification soon after completing setup, or look for a setup option in Settings. Earlier devices have a narrower window to finish the transfer. A factory reset may be necessary if that opportunity has passed, and resetting erases data stored locally on the Pixel. Back up anything you have added to the new phone before resetting it.
Google describes the generation-specific options in its Pixel data-transfer guide.

Apps and app data
Apps from Google Play may be reinstalled, but an app’s data comes back only if it supports the relevant backup or transfer method. Content stored only inside an app, or tied to a different phone manufacturer, may not transfer. For messaging apps such as WhatsApp, use the app’s own backup and restore steps for chat history.
Texts and attachments
Texts and attachments can be among the data copied from an available Android phone. If they are missing, confirm that you selected the relevant data category during transfer and check Google Messages on the old phone where applicable. For a restore without the old phone, whether messages return depends on the available backup.

Photos, videos, and contacts
Photos, videos, and contacts can sync through their own Google services rather than being part of the device backup. If they are missing, check that the Pixel is signed in to the correct Google Account and that the relevant backup or sync is enabled. Google explains the distinction in its Pixel backup guidance.
Moving from an iPhone
Use Google’s iPhone-specific Pixel setup guidance for platform-specific transfer steps and limits. Do not assume that every iOS item has an Android equivalent or can be copied.
Troubleshoot missing or delayed data
- Apps have not appeared yet: Give downloads and installations time to finish, and make sure the Pixel has an internet connection.
- The transfer paused or stopped: Check available storage on the Pixel. Google says a transfer may pause when storage is full.
- Photos or contacts are missing: Verify the Google Account on the Pixel, then check the relevant Google service’s sync or backup status.
- Messages are missing: Confirm that you selected messages during direct transfer. If restoring from backup, check that the selected backup includes them; on the old phone, update Google Messages where applicable.
- The backup is not ready: Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. This is a possible backup-completion window, not a promised restore duration.
- You skipped transfer during setup: Use Android Switch on Pixel 9 and later, or check for “Finish setup” on an earlier Pixel. If a reset is required, first preserve local data you want to keep.
