Build a player in sequence: use EXP items to raise their level, then use the matching Potential Breakthrough mark when they reach the cap for their current star rank. Develop skills with Boots, and improve tactics and coaching separately. Exact costs, rewards, and menu labels can change between game versions, so check the requirements shown in your copy of Captain Tsubasa: Ace.
How player upgrading works
The main progression loop has separate systems for player level, level cap, skills, tactics, and coaching. Each uses different resources; raising a player’s level does not itself replace the other upgrade steps.

These mechanics are described in beginner guides published in 2023 and 2024, rather than current official patch documentation. The guides do not establish comparable costs or efficiency for the different paths. GamingonPhone’s June 2024 beginner guide, MuMu Player’s December 2023 guide, and LDPlayer’s approximately 2023 guide describe the systems; use your in-game screens for current requirements.
Raise a player’s level with EXP
Player training uses EXP items to increase a character’s level. Energy Drinks are identified as one such item. GamingonPhone also describes auto-training that uses EXP earned through offline mode. The guides do not establish current item quantities, exact menu paths, or whether offline EXP is available under the same conditions in every version.

- Open the player-training interface in your game and select the player you want to develop.
- Review the EXP items available and apply them to raise the player’s level. Confirm the displayed cost before spending them.
- If your version offers auto-training, check its displayed offline EXP amount and use it if appropriate.
Use Potential Breakthrough to raise the level cap
Training and breakthrough work in sequence: first level the player to the maximum allowed by their current star rank; then use Potential Breakthrough to raise that cap. The guides describe breakthrough marks as attribute-specific, so check the player’s attribute and the mark requirement shown in-game.

To collect marks, the guides point to Potential Special Training stages associated with these four categories. The stage names, rewards, mark rarity, and availability are version-sensitive; check the current training-stage screen rather than relying on an older reward schedule.

Develop skills separately with Boots
Boots are described as items for increasing player skill level, not as EXP items for raising the player’s overall level. Breakthroughs are also described as unlocking more skills. The sources do not establish current skill-up costs, exact skill-up rules, or player-specific unlock thresholds, so inspect the skill screen and its requirements before using Boots.

Level tactics
Tactics are a separate development path. The LDPlayer guide describes tactics as equipment and says unused tactic cards can be used to level them. Check the tactic’s displayed effect and the card cost in your version before committing cards.

Upgrade an instructor
GamingonPhone describes upgrading an instructor with required materials to unlock strategies and gain a rating bonus. It does not provide current material costs or a complete list of unlock conditions; use the instructor screen to see what your selected upgrade requires.
Match players to positions
GamingonPhone also describes increasing player-position compatibility by putting players in suitable positions. This is distinct from spending EXP, marks, Boots, or tactic cards: it is a team-setup consideration, so review the lineup and compatibility indicators when arranging your squad.
