No single platform is a dependable replacement for Google News. Publishers are better served by combining channels they control, such as newsletters, with search visibility and a few carefully measured aggregator or social referrals. Compare them by engaged visits, repeat readership, operating effort and audience fit—not raw traffic alone.

First, understand what Google News does—and does not—require

Google may find a publisher’s site through normal web crawling. Publisher Center is optional for Google News eligibility, and using it does not guarantee that a publication or story will appear or rank. Google says publishers can check eligible content’s visibility in the Google News performance report in Search Console. Google’s publisher guidance also states: “Using Publisher Center is entirely optional, and does not affect your site’s eligibility for Google News.”

The setup changed in March 2025: Google News publication pages are now generated automatically, and Google News no longer uses RSS feeds or web locations submitted in Publisher Center to create those pages. Do not submit a Publisher Center feed expecting it to establish a Google News publication page. Google’s documentation on publication pages describes the change.

Which alternatives are worth evaluating?

These channels serve different purposes. A newsletter builds a direct relationship; search and platforms can introduce new readers; social sharing and alerts can help distribute stories. A mix is usually more resilient than betting on one referral source.

Google News Initiative audience strategy Subscriber growth, repeat visits, engagement, production effort, and how much of the audience relationship remains with the publisher.
Search An important discovery route, but one whose referral volume can change sharply. Referral sessions, engaged visits, topic coverage, technical requirements, and exposure to algorithm changes.
Apple News Publishing through a CMS using Apple News Format and the Apple News API, or authoring directly; engagement metrics and an advertising platform are also available. Apple News Publisher Geographic audience, acceptance and workflow, engagement, ad terms, and whether readers click through to the publisher or consume content in the platform.
NewsBreak, SmartNews, Flipboard, and other aggregators Potential discovery and referral sources. These platforms appear among sources cited by nonprofit publishers, but results and access rules vary by outlet. Institute for Nonprofit News research Availability in your market, onboarding requirements, referral volume, click-through behavior, engagement, and the effort required to maintain distribution.
Social sharing and push alerts Additional ways to bring stories to readers; Google News Initiative recommends social sharing as a visit-attraction route. What the available audience figures can—and cannot—tell you

Published figures provide context for testing channels, not a forecast of what a particular publisher will receive.

  • Google organic search: Reuters Institute’s 2026 report cites Chartbeat data from more than 2,500 sites. Comparing November 2024 with November 2025, Google organic-search referrals declined 33% globally and 38% in the United States. This describes that dataset and period; it is not a prediction for every publisher. Reuters Institute, 2026
  • Apple News use: Reuters Institute’s 2025 report gives weekly reach of 14% in the United States and 9% in the United Kingdom. Those are audience-use figures, not the share of a publisher’s traffic or a promise of referrals. Reuters Institute, 2025
  • Other referrals at nonprofit outlets: Institute for Nonprofit News reports that “other referrals” accounted for 14% of traffic in its index data. Respondents named NewsBreak, SmartNews, Flipboard, Apple News, and Google News among those sources. The cited page does not specify a publication year, so the figure should not be treated as a current industry benchmark. Institute for Nonprofit News research

How to choose channels without chasing empty reach

  1. Set a baseline. Record current referral sessions, engaged visits, repeat behavior, newsletter subscriptions, and the staff time needed to publish and maintain each channel.
  2. Choose a channel for a clear job. Use newsletters to deepen a direct relationship; test aggregators or social distribution for discovery; keep improving search visibility for people actively looking for relevant coverage.
  3. Verify the platform’s fit before investing. Check whether it operates in your target geography, what content and technical workflows it accepts, and whether readers are sent to your site or remain inside the platform. Requirements and terms can vary.
  4. Run a measured trial. Track referral volume alongside engaged sessions, repeat visits, and operational effort. Compare like periods and account for differences in the stories published; do not infer durable value from a short-lived spike.
  5. Keep, adjust, or stop based on outcomes. A channel that produces many visits but little engagement may be less useful than a smaller source that brings repeat readers. Reassess as platform performance and rules change.

Apple News advertising terms to check

Apple says publishers keep 100% of advertising revenue from ads they sell and 70% from ads Apple sells. This is the platform’s stated revenue split, not an estimate of income; actual earnings depend on advertising sold and audience performance. Apple News Publisher
