There is no single “tokens per task” figure that fairly compares Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Their billing systems work differently: Claude Code may bill an API-key session per token or draw on an account pool; Cursor separates monthly usage pools and applies model-specific rates; Copilot converts model-token charges into AI Credits. To compare what you might pay, look at the sign-in method or plan, model, token categories, included allowance, and overage rules—not just a model’s input-token price.

The product details below were checked against official documentation on October 7, 2026. Rates and allowances can change, so consult the linked live pages before budgeting.

How the three billing systems differ

“Token usage” can mean tokens processed by a model, a product’s allowance consumed, or a charge shown on a bill. Those are related, but they are not interchangeable. A per-token rate does not reveal the cost of a complete coding task unless you also know how much context was sent, how many agent rounds or retries occurred, what was generated, how caching was treated, and what usage was included in the plan.

Service How usage is metered What happens beyond included usage Where to inspect usage
Claude Code Depends on authentication: an Enterprise seat uses an organizational pool with rolling resets; API-key usage is pay-as-you-go and billed per token. API-key use is pay-as-you-go. An Enterprise seat can reach its usage limit and reset. For API billing, use /cost for current-session token and dollar usage; use /context to inspect loaded context.
Cursor Separate monthly Cursor Models and Other Models pools. Other Models are third-party models charged at model API rates. On-demand usage can continue after included usage is exhausted; upgrading is another option. Dashboard and Spending tab show pool usage and on-demand charges.
GitHub Copilot Model-specific input, output, and cached-token charges are converted to AI Credits. One credit is $0.01 USD. Additional AI-credit usage may be enabled and budgeted; otherwise, the plan allowance applies. Copilot usage settings and the published model-pricing table.

Allowances vary by account and plan; the table describes billing mechanics, not equal allowances or equivalent task quality. See Anthropic’s Claude Code usage guide, Cursor’s Models & Pricing page, Cursor’s usage and limits help page, and GitHub’s Copilot model-pricing documentation.

Claude Code: authentication changes the bill

Claude Code does not have one universal usage meter. Anthropic’s guide distinguishes an Enterprise seat, which uses an organizational pool with rolling resets, from API-key authentication, which is pay-as-you-go and billed per token. Check how you are signed in before interpreting a usage figure or comparing it with another product’s allowance.

Why context matters

Anthropic explains, “Every turn sends three things:” conversation history, project context, and the current request. As a conversation continues, the amount of context sent can affect token consumption. The guide recommends referencing file paths instead of pasting large files, trimming logs, and referring to large artifacts by path when appropriate.

Inspect and manage a session

  • /cost reports current-session token and dollar usage for API billing.
  • /context shows loaded context.
  • /compact or /clear can help manage session context.
  • /model is among the guide’s quick-reference commands for checking or changing model settings.

These controls help you inspect or manage a session; the documentation does not promise a specific dollar saving from using them. See Anthropic’s guide to Claude Code models, usage, and limits for account-specific details.

Cursor: separate pools, model rates, and token categories

Cursor documents two monthly usage pools: Cursor Models and Other Models. The latter covers third-party models priced at their model API rates. Its dashboard reports the pools, and on-demand use can continue after included usage runs out. Which pool and rate apply depends on the model selected and the plan.

Example rate-card entry

As an illustration of how token categories affect a rate card, Cursor’s reviewed pricing page listed Claude Sonnet 5 at $2 per million input tokens, $2.50 per million cache-write tokens, $0.20 per million cache-read tokens, and $10 per million output tokens. These are rates listed on the page reviewed October 7, 2026—not a forecast of what a particular coding session will cost. Cursor also documents a $0.25-per-million-token Cursor Token Rate for third-party requests on Teams and Enterprise plans.

Because input, cache-write, cache-read, and output tokens have different rates, a model’s headline input price alone is not enough to estimate a task’s cost. Check the currently selected model, applicable plan, pool balance, and any on-demand usage in Cursor’s Models & Pricing documentation and usage and limits help.

GitHub Copilot: model charges become AI Credits

Copilot calculates charges for model input, output, and cached tokens and expresses them as GitHub AI Credits. GitHub defines one AI Credit as $0.01 USD. Monthly credit allowances differ by Individual and organizational plan, so a credit allowance is not a fixed number of prompts or coding tasks.

GitHub treats paid-plan code completions and next-edit suggestions separately: those are not billed in AI Credits and remain unlimited. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing Copilot’s agent or chat usage with its inline completion features. Check the current allowance and model rates in GitHub’s Copilot model-pricing documentation.

How to make a useful cost comparison

A fair comparison is a record of a particular task on particular accounts and models, not a universal “tokens per coding task” number. For a practical side-by-side estimate, use the same representative task and note the billing details that differ between products.

  1. Record the configuration. Note the date, account or plan, authentication method where relevant, and selected model for each service.
  2. Run the same task. Keep the task description and repository context as consistent as practical, and record agent rounds and retries.
  3. Capture token categories where disclosed. Record input, cache-read, cache-write, and output tokens when available; do not assume every product exposes the same breakdown.
  4. Track included usage and charges. Record how much of each allowance or pool the run consumed and any out-of-pocket on-demand or API charges.
  5. Label the result narrowly. Report it as that run under those account and model settings, not as a general ranking or guaranteed cost for future tasks.

No matched-task trial in the cited product documentation establishes that one of these services is cheaper across workloads. Their billing paths, allowances, and token reporting are not directly interchangeable.

Why a single token-count ranking can mislead

A 2026 arXiv preprint, How Do AI Agents Spend Your Money? Analyzing and Predicting Token Consumption in Agentic Coding Tasks, reports up to 30-fold variation in total tokens across repeated runs of the same task in the study’s tested agentic coding tasks. That finding is specific to the paper’s tasks and methods; it does not show that Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot individually varies by that amount in ordinary use, nor does it rank their prices.

For readers comparing tools, the implication is limited but useful: a single run may not represent later runs, and token counts alone cannot settle which product costs less. Model choice, context, caching, retries, and plan allowances also shape the bill.
