Use Google Search to learn about a destination and check its official information; use Google Maps to find places nearby, compare their locations, save a shortlist and plan routes. They overlap—local business profiles and reviews can appear in both—so a reliable approach is to research in Search, then organize and navigate in Maps. Confirm important, time-sensitive details with the venue before you go.
Google Maps vs. Google Search: which is better for each planning task?
| Planning task | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Understand a place, compare information, or find its official website | Google Search | Search helps surface web pages relevant to your query. A local business profile may appear too, but use the venue’s own page for details such as admission rules and reservations. | Find places near a neighborhood, landmark, or current location | Google Maps | Nearby searches let you explore categories and results in their geographic context. Google says local results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. Search for nearby places and explore the area. |
| Get ideas for restaurants, sights, and activities | Google Maps Explore | Explore can suggest nearby options, including local favorites; recommendations may adapt to location and time. Some lists are available only in selected cities. Find nearby inspiration in the Explore tab. |
| Keep a shortlist of candidate places | Google Maps | You can save places to lists and, when signed in, access them across devices. Google documents a limit of 3,000 entries per saved list. Save favorite places. |
| Compare locations and plan a journey between stops | Google Maps | Maps provides directions in several travel modes and route options. Its cited computer instructions allow up to nine stops, including the final destination. Availability and options can vary by mode and location. Get directions and show routes. |
| Check a detail that can change, such as holiday hours | Search the venue’s official page, then confirm with the venue | Google may draw business information from owners, public web content, licensed data, and user contributions. A profile is useful, but it is not a guarantee that a time-sensitive detail is current. How Google sources Business Profile information. |
What Google Search is useful for before a visit
Exploring and checking sources
Start in Search when you are still deciding what to visit or need context that a map pin cannot provide. Search can help you find an attraction’s official site, compare coverage from different pages, and look for practical information such as entry rules or reservation requirements. Results depend on your query and other factors, so compare sources rather than treating one result as a complete answer.
Finding venue information
A business profile may appear in Search alongside web pages. That makes Search convenient for a first check, but the official venue page is a better place to verify policies, ticket availability, special hours, or last-entry rules. If the detail matters to your plans, contact the venue directly.
What Google Maps adds to visit planning
Discovering places in a specific area
Maps is the stronger starting point when location is central to the question: for example, what to see near a hotel or where to eat near a landmark. Nearby searches show places in relation to one another, and Explore can offer ideas for restaurants, sights, and activities. Explore features and lists are not available in every city, and individual results can differ with location and other factors.

#1 Best Overall
Google says local Maps results are primarily determined by relevance, distance, and prominence. It also says payments from other companies do not influence local results and that paid content is labeled. Ratings and descriptions can help you narrow a list, but a high rating alone does not establish whether a place suits your needs.
Saving candidates for later
Save promising places to a Maps list so you can return to them while planning. Google’s documented cross-device workflow requires signing in, and each saved list can contain up to 3,000 entries. Google Maps Help explains how to save and manage places.
Planning routes and multiple stops
Maps can show routes for different travel modes, with route options and customization depending on the journey. The computer directions guide documents up to nine stops, including the final destination; do not assume every travel mode or location supports identical options. Check the route you intend to use before setting out. Google’s directions guide has the platform-specific instructions.
A practical Search-to-Maps workflow
- Research in Search. Look up the destination, attraction type, or question you are trying to answer. Open official venue pages for current hours, admission rules, closures, and reservations.
- Compare candidates in Maps. Check where likely options are, how they relate to one another, and what the route between them looks like.
- Save your shortlist. Add candidates to a Maps list for easier retrieval. Sign in if you want to use the documented cross-device saving workflow.
- Review the journey. Select a travel mode and inspect route options. For multiple stops, the cited computer guide supports up to nine stops including the destination.
- Prepare for limited connectivity if needed. Download the relevant map area in advance, if downloads are available for your region and device. Offline features have important limits, described below.
- Confirm details that could disrupt the visit. Contact the venue about special hours, ticket availability, or last-entry rules rather than relying only on a listing.
What to know about reviews, listings, and changing details
Local profiles and reviews can appear in both Search and Maps, but the information may come from several sources and may not reflect a recent change at a venue. Google says its displayed review score is an average of Google-published ratings on a five-star scale; after a new review, an updated score can take up to two weeks. Treat reviews as one input, not a substitute for checking whether the place fits your plans. Google’s review-score guidance.

Google’s cited offline guidance is for Android, and availability of map downloads varies by region. For offline driving guidance, the route must fit within the downloaded area. The Android help page says traffic information and alternate routes are unavailable offline, as are transit, cycling, and walking directions. Downloading an area therefore helps with limited connectivity, but it does not reproduce all online Maps features. Download areas and navigate offline in Google Maps.
