To check whether an accessory will work with an iPhone or iPad, identify the exact device model, the accessory’s connector, and the function you need—then confirm all three against the accessory maker’s current compatibility information. A plug that fits is not proof that charging, data transfer, audio, or video features will work as expected.

Start with the exact Apple device model

Find the model name and generation in the device’s Settings or identification information, then compare it with the accessory maker’s supported-device list. Avoid relying on a broad label such as “iPad” or “USB-C iPhone”: supported features can differ between models that share a connector.

Apple says iPhone 15 and later models have USB-C. Its current iPhone USB-C guidance describes the connector and capabilities by model. Apple’s iPad USB-C guide lists supported iPad model families for the functions it covers. Those lists may change as Apple releases devices, so check the latest information rather than treating any article’s model list as permanent.

For cases, MagSafe or other wireless charging, Bluetooth devices, Mac accessories, and Apple Watch accessories, the USB-C information below does not establish universal compatibility. Check the exact model against the accessory manufacturer’s current compatibility list.

Apple 20W USB-C Compact Power Adapter: Fast and Convenient Charging, Type C Wall Charger
  • DESIGNED BY APPLE — This 20W USB‑C Compact Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in the office, or on the go.
  • FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Pair with iPhone 8 or later for fast charging — up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes* for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro when paired with the 30W USB-C Power Adapter. Compatible with any USB-C enabled device.
  • Testing conducted by Apple in August 2024 using preproduction iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max units and software, and Apple MagSafe Chargers (1-meter Model A2580 and 2-meter Model A3250) with Apple USB-C Power Adapter (30W Model A2164). Fast-charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Times measured from the appearance of the Apple logo as the unit started up. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.
  • WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple 20W USB-C Compact Power Adapter only. Charging cable sold separately.

Match the connector to the job you need done

Write down the port on the Apple device and both ends of the accessory or cable. Then specify the task: charging, syncing or transferring files, audio, storage, or video output. USB-C describes a connector, not a guarantee of a particular speed or feature.

  • Charging: Confirm the accessory or charger supports the device and the required power. If charging through an adapter, check the adapter’s stated limit.
  • Data and file transfer: Check both the device’s supported speed and the cable’s capability. Apple says the cable included with iPhone supports charging and USB 2 speeds. USB 3 performance on listed iPhone models requires compatible USB 3 equipment and a USB 3 cable.
  • Audio: Confirm that the accessory supports the device’s connector and audio connection method; an adapter may be needed.
  • Storage and other peripherals: Check the accessory maker’s requirements and any needed hub, cable, or adapter. Apple documents USB-C iPad connections for external storage, cameras, hubs and docks, keyboards, audio interfaces and MIDI devices, and USB-to-Ethernet adapters.
  • Video: Verify the iPad model, display, cable, and any adapter together. USB-C iPad display resolutions and Thunderbolt support vary by model; some displays require an adapter, and HDMI output limits are model-dependent.

For example, Apple documents USB 3.2 Gen 2 transfer speeds up to 10 Gbit per second on listed iPhone Pro models when an optional compatible USB 3 cable is used. That figure is not a promise that every USB-C iPhone, cable, or accessory will reach that speed. For iPad external displays, Apple lists support up to 4K, 5K, or 6K depending on the model and display combination; not every USB-C iPad supports the same resolution. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance for the applicable model details.

Check adapters and cables as carefully as the accessory

An adapter can bridge a connector mismatch, but it does not add capabilities the device, cable, or accessory lacks. Check the adapter’s supported device models, intended function, power limit, data rate, and any compatibility notes.

USB-C to Lightning

Apple’s USB-C to Lightning Adapter works with USB-C iPhone and iPad models to connect Lightning accessories for charging, data, and audio. Apple specifies a maximum of 24W charging through this adapter and data transfer up to 480 Mbps (USB 2). Some features require iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 or later.

Apple notes that some combinations of this adapter, a Lightning cable, and a vehicle can disrupt wired CarPlay. If that happens, Apple suggests using a direct USB-A-to-USB-C cable instead. Do not assume the adapter will suit every Lightning accessory or every vehicle setup; check the accessory maker’s details and Apple’s compatibility notes.

Other iPad display and audio adapters

Apple documents USB-C to HDMI adapters for supported iPad display connections and a USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for wired audio on iPad. Before buying or connecting one, verify that your exact iPad model supports the intended output and that the display or headphones match the adapter’s requirements.

Use Made for certification, then verify the specific product

Apple recommends looking for the Made for label for the relevant device category when choosing third-party electronic accessories. Apple describes these products as designed for the corresponding iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch category and certified by their developer to meet Apple’s performance standards. Its explanation is available in About Made for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch accessories.

The label is a useful certification signal, not a substitute for checking the exact product’s supported model and features. Apple also says information about independent third-party products is not an endorsement and directs customers to the vendor for more information.

If a wired accessory is not recognized

A connection can fail because of the device’s security setting even when the connector and accessory are otherwise appropriate. Apple says iPhone and iPad generally require unlocking before USB, Thunderbolt, or iPad Smart Connector accessories communicate. External storage always requires unlocking before use.

  1. Unlock the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Disconnect the accessory, then reconnect it while the device is unlocked.
  3. If it still does not communicate, review Settings > Privacy & Security and the Wired Accessories controls.

Apple notes that an accessory may not communicate or charge while the device is locked, although charging from a USB power adapter still works. See Apple’s USB and accessory connection guidance for the setting details.
