Apple News mixes shared editorial picks with personalized suggestions: Top Stories are the same for everyone, while followed channels and topics, Siri suggestions, trending stories, and other parts of Today can reflect your interests. You can influence the mix, but Apple does not publish a ranking formula or say how much weight it gives any individual signal.
Why does Apple News show me these stories?
The Today feed is a combination of different kinds of content, not one personalized list. Apple says Top Stories are selected by its editors and appear the same for everyone. Other Today components can be tailored to you, including stories from channels and topics you follow and Siri suggestions. Today also includes trending stories popular with other News readers. Depending on your location, the feed may include My Sports, local news, audio briefings, or puzzles. Apple’s iPhone guide to stories chosen for you describes these components.

Apple says its recommendations can reflect stories you read, save, or share, as well as channels and topics you follow. You can also block sources or ask for more or fewer stories like a particular one. These are known inputs and controls—not a disclosed ranking recipe. Apple does not specify feature weights, a complete ordering algorithm, or a numeric effect for a particular action. Apple News & Privacy explains the information Apple says it uses.
How do I change my Apple News feed?
Choose a control based on how broadly you want to affect the feed. A story-level response is narrower than following or blocking a channel, while restricting Today changes the feed as a whole.

| Control | Scope | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Follow or unfollow a channel or topic | Channel or topic | Followed sources appear in Today and other feeds, and following helps News understand your interests. |
| Suggest More or Suggest Less | Similar stories | Signals whether you want more or fewer stories like a particular story. |
| Block a channel or topic | Source or topic across the feed | Changes the rest of the feed; a blocked source’s headline may still appear in shared Top Stories and is identified as blocked. |
| Stop a suggested group | Suggested channel or topic group in Today | Removes that suggestion without blocking the channel or topic itself. |
| Restrict Stories in Today | Entire Today feed | Limits Today to followed channels; removes Top Stories and Trending Stories and significantly reduces variety. |
Give feedback on a story
In Today, tap the More control under a headline and choose Suggest More or Suggest Less. This is story-level feedback; it is different from blocking the source, which affects the broader feed.
Follow, block, or stop a suggestion
Use the channel or topic controls in News to follow or unfollow sources, or block them. If you only want to dismiss a suggested channel or topic group in Today, use the option to stop that suggestion rather than blocking the source. Apple’s iPhone News guide describes the available feed controls.

Restrict Today to followed channels
On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > News > Restrict Stories in Today. This setting narrows the feed to followed channels, so it also removes Top Stories and Trending Stories. Menu labels may differ between operating system versions.
Can I stop Apple News from recommending a topic?
Yes. Blocking a topic is the broad option; stopping a suggested topic group is narrower and does not block the topic itself. If you want Today to show only sources you have chosen, use Restrict Stories in Today on iPhone, with the trade-off that Top Stories and Trending Stories disappear.

Does Apple News use my Safari browsing?
Apple says Siri suggestions for News can draw on on-device information derived from apps you use and websites you visit with Safari, and that this information is not sent to Apple. On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > News > Siri to manage recommendations based on News reading only. Apple’s support guidance says turning off Siri & Search for News excludes Safari and other apps from the recommendation basis. Settings labels can vary by operating system version. This Siri behavior is distinct from Apple’s statement that News recommendations are based on information stored on your device; it should not be read as a claim that every related service has the same data flow.
How do Apple News privacy and syncing work?
Apple says News reading and listening activity is associated with an identifier specific to News and Stocks, rather than your Apple Account or other Apple services. It also says recommendation information is stored on your device. Separately, iCloud can sync followed channels, reading and listening history, and preferences across your devices; Apple says that history is stored for up to three months. Turning on notifications for a channel can associate that channel with your Apple Account. These statements describe different features, so “everything stays on the device” and “Apple collects nothing” would both be too broad. See Apple News & Privacy for Apple’s explanation.

Location and advertising are separate settings. If News has location access, approximate location may be used for local information and suggestions, among other purposes. To review Apple’s ad-personalization setting, use Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising on iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro, or System Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising on Mac. Turning off Personalized Ads prevents Apple from using the listed account and reading/following information for ad targeting, but may not reduce the number of ads. Apple details these uses in Apple News & Privacy.
