Neither Apple News nor Google News can be called universally more balanced based on the available evidence. In AllSides’ 2025 samples, Apple News had a larger share of articles from Center-rated outlets, while Google News had a larger share from Left- or Lean Left-rated outlets. Those snapshots cover different sections and sampling windows, and outlet ratings do not establish whether individual articles are accurate or fair. For comparing coverage of a particular event, Google News has the clearest built-in tool: Full Coverage groups related reports from multiple sources.
What does “balanced coverage” mean?
Balance can refer to several different things: a mix of publishers with different ideological ratings, multiple viewpoints on a story, accurate reporting, or fair framing. These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable. A feed can include a range of outlet ratings without making every article reliable or giving every relevant viewpoint appropriate treatment.
The recent figures below classify outlets using AllSides ratings. They do not rate the truth, accuracy, or fairness of each article, and they should be read as snapshots of the sampled sections—not scores for either app as a whole.
What the recent outlet samples show
AllSides’ 2026 analysis reported these results from samples collected in 2025:

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]

- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment

In these samples, Apple News had a larger Center-rated share, and Google News had a larger Left/Lean Left share. But the sampling periods and sections were not identical, so this is not a controlled head-to-head test. AllSides’ ratings apply to outlets, not every story those outlets publish, and these samples do not establish the mix a particular reader will see in another region or at another time.

Google says Google News featured more than 145,000 different sources in the preceding month in its 2026 account. That is a claim about source breadth, not a measure of ideological balance or of how many distinct viewpoints a reader encounters. Google’s explanation of how News works describes the company’s stated approach, not an independent evaluation of the results.
How the two apps present stories
Google News: use Full Coverage to compare reports
Google says its systems identify major stories and select content using factors that include prominence, freshness, and source authoritativeness. Personalized sections may draw on interests and sources a reader follows in News, as well as activity across Google services and YouTube. Google News Help explains how stories are selected.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a single story, Full Coverage assembles related reports from different sources. Google says this view is not personalized beyond language, region, and subscriptions. That makes it a practical starting point when the goal is to inspect how several publishers cover the same event, rather than relying on the lead item in a personalized feed. It still does not guarantee that every relevant perspective or source is represented. See Google’s description of how news works.
Apple News: editorial Top Stories plus personalized sections
Apple’s Today feed combines editor-selected Top Stories with stories from channels and topics a reader follows, suggestions, trending stories, and other features whose availability can vary by location. Apple says Top Stories appear the same for everyone; a headline from a blocked channel can still appear in that section. Readers can follow or block channels and topics. Apple’s iPhone guide to finding stories chosen for you describes these controls and feed elements.

Apple also says News interactions—including stories read, saved, or shared and the channels and topics followed—are used to tailor features such as Today. Its Apple News privacy documentation explains this personalization. The result is a mix of common editorial selection and reader-specific content, rather than a feed that is wholly editorial or wholly personalized.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an earlier study can—and cannot—tell you
A 2019 U.S. study audited Apple News’ Trending Stories and Top Stories over two months. It found that human-curated Top Stories performed better than algorithmically curated Trending Stories on several measures of source diversity, concentration, and evenness. The study is useful context for the difference editorial curation can make, but it describes Apple News sections as observed at that time. It does not establish how either service works now or compare Apple News with Google News. Read the study, “Auditing News Curation Systems”.

Which app should you use to compare viewpoints?
- Choose Google News as a starting point for one-story comparisons. Open Full Coverage to see related reporting from multiple sources; it is the most direct built-in comparison feature covered here.
- Choose Apple News if you want a blend of shared editorial selection and personal controls. Top Stories are common to readers, while following or blocking channels and topics can shape other parts of the feed.
- Use more than the default feed in either app. Follow sources with different perspectives and compare original reporting rather than treating the first headline as a complete account.
For consequential claims, check independent verification as well as coverage from more than one publisher. No outlet rating, recommendation system, or multi-source view is a substitute for evaluating the evidence behind a claim.
