Before buying a long-term U.S. Treasury bond, check when you may need the money, the bond’s yield to maturity at the price you will pay, how an early sale could affect you, and whether fixed payments fit your inflation concerns. Treasury bonds have 20- or 30-year terms and pay interest every six months, but you can sell a marketable bond before maturity only at the prevailing market price—which may be above or below face value.

Check whether the maturity fits your timeline

Treasury bonds are long-term marketable securities with 20- or 30-year terms. They pay interest twice a year. A bond’s term is not a lock-in period: marketable Treasury securities can be sold before maturity. But if you sell, you receive the market price, not necessarily the bond’s face value. TreasuryDirect: About Treasury Marketable Securities

Start with the date you might need to use the principal. If that date is uncertain or substantially earlier than the bond’s maturity, consider how you would respond to a price below face value at the time you need to sell. If you expect to hold until maturity and still own the bond then, you receive its face value; that does not remove the risk that its market value changes along the way.

Compare yield to maturity with the price you will pay

Do not choose a bond by looking only at its stated interest rate, also called its coupon. The coupon determines interest paid on the bond’s face value, while your return depends in part on the price you pay. Treasury describes yield to maturity as the annual rate of return on the security. Compare that yield with the actual transaction price and your plan to hold or sell. • If you buy above or below par and hold to maturity, the face-value repayment affects your overall return, alongside the interest payments.

Check the current offering or quote when you are ready to buy. Historical examples on Treasury’s pricing page are not current quotes. Also confirm the price, yield, any spread or fees, and account terms through the bank or brokerage handling the transaction. Treasury identifies banks and brokerages as places to obtain marketable securities but does not endorse a particular provider. TreasuryDirect: About Treasury Marketable Securities

Assess the effect of rising rates and an early sale

Bond prices generally fall when market interest rates rise. Longer maturities generally carry more interest-rate risk than otherwise similar shorter-maturity bonds, so a long-term bond can be especially sensitive to changing rates. If you sell before maturity, the price may be higher or lower than face value. Investor.gov: Bonds – FAQs

This matters most when your cash needs could force a sale. A useful check is to ask whether you could keep the bond if its resale price fell, rather than relying on a particular future market price. Federal backing addresses the U.S. government’s obligation to make payments; it does not guarantee a stable resale value.

Decide whether fixed nominal payments suit your inflation outlook

A conventional Treasury bond pays interest based on face value, so its scheduled dollar payments are fixed. Inflation can erode what those dollars buy. Investor.gov puts the risk plainly: “Inflation reduces purchasing power, which is a risk for investors receiving a fixed rate of interest.” Investor.gov: Bonds – FAQs

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) offer a different structure. Their principal adjusts with changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI); interest is paid on adjusted principal, so the payment amount can vary. At maturity, the holder receives the greater of adjusted principal or original principal. TIPS are offered with 5-, 10-, or 30-year terms. TreasuryDirect: TIPS

Feature Conventional Treasury bond TIPS
Terms described by Treasury 20 or 30 years (TreasuryDirect; publication date not stated) 5, 10, or 30 years (TreasuryDirect; publication date not stated)
Principal Face value is repaid at maturity if you still own the bond Adjusted with CPI; maturity payment is no less than original principal
Interest payments Every six months, based on face value Based on adjusted principal, so the amount can change
Inflation exposure Fixed dollar payments can lose purchasing power Principal adjusts with inflation and deflation

This comparison is about payment mechanics, not a prediction of which security will produce the better return. Compare the available yield, maturity, price, and the possibility of an early sale for the specific securities under consideration.

Understand what government backing does—and does not—cover

Treasury securities are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. That backing concerns payment by the issuer; it does not prevent a bond’s market price from falling before maturity or protect fixed payments from losing purchasing power to inflation. Investor.gov identifies credit, interest-rate, inflation, liquidity, and call risk as general bond risks. For a U.S. Treasury buyer, distinguish the government-payment question from market-value, inflation, and the practical ability to sell when needed. Investor.gov: Bonds – FAQs

Check purchase access and tax treatment

Treasury says marketable securities are available through banks and brokerages. Before placing an order, verify the security’s current price and yield and the provider’s transaction terms; those details can vary by channel and are not established by the general Treasury descriptions. Tax treatment also matters, particularly with TIPS. Treasury says federal taxes apply to TIPS interest and that principal changes may affect federal taxes; it also states that TIPS are not subject to state or local taxes. Tax rules and individual circumstances can change the result, so confirm current treatment with Treasury information or a qualified tax professional before purchasing. TreasuryDirect: TIPS
