To create a project in Asana, select Create in the top navigation or open Quick add, choose Project, then start with a blank project, a template, or a spreadsheet import. For a blank project, choose its name, team, privacy, and layout before selecting Create project.

Choose how to start the project

Asana offers three starting paths. Pick the one that best fits the work you already have:

Starting path Use it when
Blank project You want to build a one-off workflow or decide the structure yourself.
Use a template The work follows a recurring process and a ready-made or saved structure would help. Templates can include tasks, milestones, subtasks, descriptions, dates, assignees, sections, custom fields, forms, rules, bundles, and attachments.
Import a spreadsheet You already have structured work in a spreadsheet that you want to bring into Asana.

Asana’s interface labels and their placement can change, so use whichever documented entry point is visible in your account.

Create the project

  1. Open project creation: Select Create in the top navigation or open Quick add from the sidebar, then choose Project.
  2. Select a starting path: Choose Blank project, Use a template, or Import a spreadsheet.
  3. Name the project and choose its team: For a blank project, use a clear name and select the team where the work belongs. Projects live within teams and follow that team’s privacy settings and member access. In an organization, you must belong to a team to create a project; check the team field because it may default to the team highest in the sidebar.
  4. Set privacy: Choose who should be able to find and access the project. Organization-wide access makes it available across the organization; team sharing allows team members to find it; project-member privacy limits visibility to people specifically added. Confirm the current wording and your organization’s configuration before proceeding.
  5. Choose a layout: Select a view that fits how the team will use the work. The options are described below.
  6. Create it: Select Create project.

Choose a layout for the work

Layouts are different views of project work, not different project types. You can start with the view that makes the work easiest to understand.

Gantt Structured work where dependencies and deadlines matter.

Set up tasks, sections, and members

After creating the project, add the people and work needed to make it useful. Give tasks action-oriented names, and record an assignee and due date when those details are known. Sections can group tasks by stage, priority, or category; start with a few plain-language groups, then adjust them as the workflow becomes clearer.

For example, a review workflow might use sections such as Intake, In progress, Ready for review, and Done. Add project members so the right people can participate. Asana also supports section-based rules, but automation is not necessary to create a basic project.
