Microsoft says it is designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games—a broader gaming goal than a traditional console built around games released for its own console ecosystem. Helix is still in development, and Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date, price, complete specifications, or which PC games and storefronts it will support.
What is Xbox Project Helix?
Microsoft describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. The name is a development codename, not a confirmed retail product name. In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement and its developer-facing GDC post describe the system as in development.

The important distinction is the stated combination of two game categories: Xbox console games and PC games. That describes Microsoft’s design aim; it does not establish that every PC game will run on Helix or that players will have access to every PC store.
How is Project Helix different from a traditional console?
A traditional console experience generally centers on games made available for that console. Microsoft’s stated ambition for Helix is to add PC games to the Xbox console library. If delivered as described, that could blur the boundary between console and PC gaming, but the announcement does not yet explain how players will browse, buy, install, or launch PC games on the device.

| Question | What Microsoft has said about Helix | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Which games? | It is designed to play Xbox console games and PC games. | Specific PC titles, eligibility rules, editions, and whether all Xbox games will be compatible. |
| Where do games come from? | Microsoft has not named PC storefronts in the announcement. | Support for Steam or any other named store, installation behavior, and account requirements. |
| Is it a PC? | Microsoft calls Helix a console. | Whether it will run Windows as a general-purpose desktop, allow arbitrary software installation, or behave like an open PC. |
So far, the difference is a design goal, not a complete description of how open the system will be. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog announcement places Helix in a broader effort to make Xbox experiences more consistent across screens and reduce barriers between console and PC gaming.
What hardware and performance has Microsoft announced?
Microsoft says Helix will use a custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC) and is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. The announcement describes Microsoft’s target as an “order of magnitude leap” in ray-tracing performance and capability. That is Microsoft’s qualitative claim, not an independently measured result or a published benchmark.

- FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.
Microsoft has not provided CPU or GPU models, memory capacity, storage details, ports, resolution targets, or benchmark results in the announcement. The AMD partnership and ray-tracing ambition are therefore not enough to compare Helix’s performance with a particular PC or console.
Will Project Helix play older Xbox games?
Microsoft says it remains committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. That is a broad preservation commitment, not a Helix-specific compatibility catalog. The announcement does not list supported games or explain conditions such as disc support, so players should wait for Microsoft to confirm which titles and formats will work on Helix.

When will Project Helix come out?
Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date or price. It plans to ship alpha versions of Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer milestone for testing and game development—not a retail launch date.
What else has Microsoft said about Xbox across PC and screens?
Microsoft says Xbox mode will begin rolling out to Windows 11 in April 2026, starting in select markets. It describes the mode as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that retains Windows’ openness. This is part of the wider Xbox and Windows strategy; it does not confirm that Helix itself will function as a general-purpose Windows PC.

Those are Microsoft’s figures for the Play Anywhere program at that time; they are not a count of games confirmed for Helix.
