In rat studies, scarcity-related adversity can disrupt maternal caregiving, but it does not produce one uniform change in brain activity. Activity varies with the neural population measured, the postpartum timing, and whether a mother is interacting with pups, separated from them, or responding to food. These findings describe animal models; they do not establish the same causal effects in humans.

What the newest rat study found about brain activity

A Society for Neuroscience summary of a 2026 JNeurosci study describes rat mothers given less nesting bedding. In a neuron population linked to pup interactions, activity was higher before and during insensitive behavior toward pups. When the mothers were separated from their pups, activity in that population was lower than in mothers with sufficient nesting resources. The summary reports no group difference when mothers received a food reward.

The pattern is therefore tied to context rather than a simple overall increase or decrease. The summary quotes study author Millie Rincón-Cortés: “We predicted these neurons would be changed when mothers were expressing adequate maternal care toward their pups, but that didn’t happen. Contrary to our prediction, there was only increased activity right before and during insensitive behavior—it seems to be a maladaptive brain signature.”

The report is a study summary, not the full methods and numerical results. It does not establish sample size, exact recording protocol, or effect estimates, and it is not evidence of independent replication. The underlying paper is identified as “Ventral Tegmental Area Dopamine Neuron Dynamics During Postpartum Scarcity-Adversity Depend on Caregiving Quality and Pup Proximity,” JNeurosci (2026), DOI 10.1523/JNEUROSCI.0997-26.2026. How scarcity-related caregiving changes were measured

Animal studies assess distinct behaviors rather than treating “maternal care” as one outcome. Measures in the cited rat and rodent work include time in the nest, nursing, whether pups remain huddled together, pup retrieval, and insensitive or other adverse pup-directed behavior. A change in one measure does not establish a change in every aspect of care.

Nesting, nursing, and huddling

A 2018 rodent study reported that scarcity-adversity was associated with less time in the nest and nursing, as well as less time with all pups huddled together. Nursing time was significantly lower in that experiment (t(19) = 4.721, p = 0.0001). Pup weight at postnatal day 14 did not significantly differ between groups: the control mean was 28.790 g ± 0.846 and the scarcity-adversity mean was 29.220 g ± 0.679 (t(19) = 0.397, p = 0.6940). These are results from that experiment, not general estimates of what scarcity does to pup growth. Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience study (2018).

Retrieval and adverse behavior

In a rat study exposing dams to postpartum scarcity-adversity from postpartum days 2–9, researchers reported more adverse maternal behaviors, impaired pup retrieval, and more passive stress-coping responses. These are behavioral findings; they are distinct from the neural recordings described in the newer study. Rincón-Cortés and Grace, Neuropsychopharmacology (published online October 26, 2021; issue date January 2022).

Why the earlier dopamine result is not a contradiction

The Rincón-Cortés and Grace study measured the population activity of dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). It found fewer active VTA dopamine neurons in dams at postpartum days 9–10, but not day 21, indicating that this finding depended on the postpartum measurement point. Adult female offspring exposed to scarcity-adversity early in life showed a long-lasting attenuation in dopamine activity.

This result should not be collapsed into the 2026 report’s finding. The studies describe different neural measures and contexts: the newer summary reports activity in a neuron population in relation to pup interaction, pup separation, and food reward, while the earlier study reports the number of active VTA dopamine neurons at specified postpartum stages. The available findings do not support a general rule that scarcity uniformly raises or lowers maternal brain activity.

Exposure and timing matter when comparing studies

Study or exposure What was exposed, and when Neural or behavioral outcomes described
Limited nesting resources in the 2026 summary Rat mothers had less nesting bedding; the summary does not state the exact exposure schedule. Activity in a pup-interaction-linked neuron population varied with pup interaction, pup separation, and food reward; insensitive pup-directed behavior was also reported.
Postpartum scarcity-adversity in the 2021/2022 rat study Dams experienced scarcity-adversity on postpartum days 2–9. More adverse maternal behavior, impaired pup retrieval, and more passive stress-coping responses; fewer active VTA dopamine neurons at postpartum days 9–10 but not day 21.
Early-life scarcity-adversity in the same study Female offspring experienced adversity early in life and were assessed as adults. Long-lasting attenuation in dopamine activity in adult female offspring.
Neonatal undernutrition in the 1984 study Undernutrition involved daily separation of mother and litter, combining food deprivation with sensory deprivation. Later maternal-care deficits were reported; the comparison condition suggested some behavioral changes were more associated with sensory deprivation.

The 1984 undernutrition paradigm is not equivalent to postpartum limited-nesting scarcity: food restriction and separation were combined, so its findings cannot be attributed to the same exposure. Salas, Torrero, and Pulido, Physiology & Behavior (1984).

What the evidence says about anxiety and cognition

A separate 2026 rat study summary reports more insensitive pup-directed maternal behavior but no detected group differences in the anxiety-like behaviors, spatial memory, or object-recognition memory tested. This means those particular tests did not detect group differences; it does not establish that scarcity cannot affect anxiety or cognition under other conditions. Behavioural Brain Research study summary, online July 15, 2026.

What these animal findings can—and cannot—show

Together, the studies point to caregiving disruptions alongside neural effects that depend on the exposure, the measurement, and the behavioral situation. Less nesting resources, postpartum scarcity-adversity, early-life adversity, and neonatal undernutrition are not interchangeable experimental conditions. Nor are nursing time, pup retrieval, insensitive behavior, VTA dopamine-neuron population activity, and activity during pup interaction interchangeable outcomes.
