What you need
- A Google TV Streamer that is turned on.
- An Android phone with Google TV mobile version 4.27.8.93 or later, or an iPhone running iOS 14.0 or later.
- The latest Google TV or Google Home app. Google notes that outside the US, the Android app is called Google Play Movies & TV.
Google’s documented Connect TV and pairing sequence is for Android. Its support page also lists iPhone compatibility and Google Home as a control option, but does not give the same iPhone screen-by-screen steps. Check Google’s phone-remote requirements and instructions if your app labels or compatibility details differ.
Pair the Google TV app on Android
- Turn on your TV and Google TV Streamer.
- Open the Google TV app on your Android phone.
- Tap Connect TV near the bottom right. Google’s general instructions call this control TVs nearby.
- Select your Google TV Streamer from the device list.
- Enter the code displayed on the TV screen.
- Tap Pair.
Google describes the phone as a remote after pairing. You can use the phone keyboard to type, swipe to navigate TV apps, control playback, and use virtual buttons for navigation and settings. Google’s app guidance also lists volume and Google Assistant controls. See Google’s instructions for connecting and controlling a TV with the Google TV app.
What to do if pairing fails
Check the Wi-Fi network
Make sure the phone and Google TV Streamer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Google includes this as a key check for virtual-remote connection problems.

Restart the Streamer
- Unplug the streaming device from power.
- Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Try setting up the virtual remote again.
Check app and operating-system compatibility
Confirm that your phone meets the app and operating-system requirements listed above. App versions and labels can change, so consult Google’s current requirements if the connection option is missing.
Using an iPhone or Google Home instead
Google lists iPhone with iOS 14.0 or later as compatible with its phone-remote feature and names both Google TV and Google Home as control options. The published Connect TV/code/Pair directions are specifically for Android, so on iPhone use the controls shown in the current Google Home or Google TV app rather than assuming the Android labels are identical. App remote pairing is separate from initial setup
Pairing the phone app is not the same process as setting up the Google TV Streamer for the first time or pairing its physical Voice Remote. Google’s Google TV Streamer setup instructions cover initial setup and the physical remote separately. You do not need to pair the Voice Remote as part of the phone-app procedure.

After setup, Google says you can add the virtual remote to Android Quick Settings for quicker access. Follow Google’s Google TV app control instructions for the available shortcut guidance.
