If someone may have accessed your Discord account, start by securing the email account tied to it, then reset your Discord password, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and remove any Authorized Apps you do not recognize. If your email address was changed, use Discord’s recovery link promptly. Report the compromise and any unauthorized charges through Discord’s official support forms.
1. Secure your email and check for Discord’s change notice
Secure the email account connected to Discord: change its password to a unique one and enable MFA if the provider offers it. This is a sensible containment step; a Discord compromise does not by itself establish that your email account was accessed.
Search your inbox, including spam and trash, for a message from Discord titled “Discord Email Address changed.” If the address on your Discord account was changed, Discord says the message contains a link to undo that change. The recovery link is valid for 48 hours, so use it promptly: Discord’s changed-email recovery instructions.
2. Reset your Discord password
At the Discord login screen, select Forgot your password? and follow the reset link sent to your email. Choose a strong password you do not use anywhere else. Discord’s password instructions specify a minimum of eight characters, with possible additional requirements depending on region. A password manager can help generate and store a unique password; if you reused the exposed password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.

3. Enable MFA and keep a recovery route
Discord supports security keys and passkeys, authenticator apps, and SMS. Discord recommends security keys. Authenticator apps generate time-based codes. SMS is supported, but Discord warns that phone numbers can be taken over through SIM swapping, so it does not recommend SMS MFA. No MFA method eliminates every risk; choose one you can access reliably and plan for device loss.

| Method | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Security key or passkey | Discord recommends security keys. Make sure your key or passkey works with the devices you use, and consider how you will sign in if you lose access to it. |
| Authenticator app | Supported by Discord; keep access to the authenticator and store Discord’s backup codes separately and securely. |
| SMS | Supported, but Discord warns about SIM swapping and does not recommend it. |
| Backup codes | One-time recovery codes, not a replacement for MFA. Store them securely and somewhere you can reach if your primary device is unavailable. |
In Discord, open User Settings and go to the account’s password and authentication controls to set up MFA and save the backup codes provided during enrollment. Consult Discord’s MFA setup instructions for the current interface and available methods. Discord says support cannot remove MFA or issue new backup codes if you lose access to your existing recovery options.
If you used the changed-email recovery link, Discord says the process removes associated phone numbers and MFA devices. Once you regain the account, add back any number or MFA device you still need and save fresh recovery information.

4. Remove unfamiliar Authorized Apps
In Discord, open User Settings, then Authorized Apps. Review the list and deauthorize apps you do not recognize or no longer want connected. Changing your password does not tell you whether an unwanted app authorization remains, so review this separately. An unfamiliar entry is a reason to remove access, not proof that the app caused the incident.
Discord’s compromised-account guidance includes instructions for reviewing Authorized Apps: My Discord Account was Hacked or Compromised.

5. Check the device you used
Discord recommends running a Windows Defender scan on Windows after a suspected compromise. Treat the scan as a useful check, not proof that a device is clean. Avoid unknown links and downloads, especially files presented as games or free Nitro, and do not give credentials, personal information, or payment details to someone who asks for them. Never install a cleanup tool from a link sent by a stranger claiming to be Discord support. If the device also holds sensitive work or financial systems, consider professional incident-response help.

Use Discord’s hacked-account support form to report suspected account access. If your email was changed, Discord’s guidance says to use the hacked-account route and provide your original username and email address; include your user ID if you can. For an unrecognized charge, provide the transaction date and amount, payment method, payment identifier, and relevant screenshots through the appropriate support route described in Discord’s charge-reporting instructions.

Discord recommends submitting one support ticket per issue because duplicate tickets may delay resolution. Its compromised-account guidance also warns that requesting a chargeback or refund through a financial institution for Discord transactions may result in account suspension while Discord investigates. Report unauthorized billing accurately and follow Discord’s billing support process.
Watch for fake support messages
Discord states: “Important: Discord Staff will never contact users directly through the Discord app for support-related matters.” Do not share your password, MFA code, backup code, or payment details with anyone claiming to be support in a direct message. Navigate to Discord’s Help Center yourself rather than using a stranger’s link.
