If it is pending or rejected, the state issuer—not Google Wallet’s payment-card system—handles ID verification. If an ID is already added but will not display, reconnect the phone to the internet and check the credential’s acceptance. A payment-terminal problem is separate from an ID scan.
Why won’t my state ID add to Google Wallet?
Google’s US state ID and driver’s license feature is available only for participating jurisdictions and eligible Android devices. Google currently lists Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Puerto Rico. The phone must run Android 9 or higher, have Bluetooth and Nearby devices turned on, and use a screen lock.
- Confirm your state or territory is on Google’s supported list.
- Check that the phone runs Android 9 or higher.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Nearby devices, then set a screen lock if one is not already enabled.
A digital state ID is not a replacement for a physical ID. Keep your physical identification available when needed.
How do I fix ID photo or video capture problems?
During setup, Wallet asks you to photograph both sides of the card and record a short video. Blurry images, glare, or an unreadable barcode can interfere with the application.

- Update Google Wallet, then restart the phone after the update.
- Place the ID on a dark background in good light.
- Hold the card steady and capture clear images of the front, back, and barcode.
- Record the requested short video again if the issuer rejects the application and Wallet offers another attempt.
Google’s setup guidance recommends good lighting, a dark background, and a steady card.
Why is my ID verification pending or rejected?
The state or territory that issued the credential verifies the application. This is different from verifying a bank card for contactless payments. Follow any request for more information shown in Wallet; if the issuer rejects the application, review the instructions and try again if the app permits it.

If the application is rejected again or you need to know why, contact the ID-issuing state agency. Google’s state ID guidance directs users to the issuer for assistance, and notes that an issuer can delete an ID at its discretion. Reinstalling Wallet does not replace the issuer’s review or resolve an issuer-side decision.
Why won’t an added ID display or work when presented?
Google says a Wallet state ID needs an internet connection to stay current. If the phone has been offline for more than 30 consecutive days, the ID is unavailable until the device reconnects to the internet. Turn on Bluetooth and Nearby devices as well, then reconnect and allow Wallet to update the credential.

Presentation also depends on the requester accepting that particular digital credential. Ask the airport, agency, business, or other requester whether it accepts the state ID in Google Wallet. Google says a digital state ID that is not REAL ID compliant will not be accepted at TSA domestic travel checkpoints; check TSA’s identification guidance or ask the issuer about the credential’s status.
Is the problem a payment reader or an ID reader?
If you mean a contactless payment terminal, troubleshoot tap to pay separately. These steps address a payment transaction; they do not fix state ID verification or make an ID scan succeed.

- Check that the phone supports NFC and NFC is turned on.
- Make sure Google Wallet is the default contactless payment app, a supported payment card is added, and the phone has a screen lock and meets Google’s security requirements.
- Unlock the phone, hold it close to the reader for a few seconds, and avoid moving it away too quickly. A thick case can also interfere with NFC.
- Try another reader and confirm the store accepts mobile payments.

No. The state ID flow is tied to a participating US state or territory issuer. Google’s separate passport-based ID pass has different availability and requirements. Google says an ID pass is not an official form of identification or a replacement for physical documentation, and it may not be accepted by every requester. Keep physical ID with you as needed; see Google’s ID pass guidance.
