Amazon documents ways to review and delete Alexa history, choose automatic deletion after three or 18 months, or avoid saving voice recordings. Which gives you more control depends on whether you prioritize account-level audio retention, guest use, physical muting, or reviewing and deleting past activity.
How Alexa and Google Assistant handle listening
“Listening” can mean two different things: a device processing nearby sound locally to detect its wake phrase, or sending audio to a cloud service after activation. That distinction matters when assessing both systems.
Is Google Assistant listening to me all the time?
Google says that in standby mode, Assistant processes short audio snippets to detect activation and does not send what you say to Google servers. If Assistant detects an activation—including an accidental one—it may process and send audio to respond. Google says accidental activations can happen. How Alexa signals activation
Amazon says an Echo gives a visual or audible signal when it detects its wake word and records audio to stream to the cloud. False wake-ups can occur, and Alexa users can review history to check what was captured. This is different from saying the device continuously streams every conversation. Set up Alexa privacy controls
- Open the Alexa app: go to More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data to find recording-saving controls.
- Choose a retention option: select the available choice to avoid saving voice recordings or to set automatic deletion after three or 18 months.
- Review past activity: open Review Alexa History to inspect or delete recordings, transcripts, and typed requests.
If you choose not to save voice recordings, Amazon says transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. Amazon also notes that other records related to requests, information held by third parties, or data stored outside Amazon’s cloud may not be deleted through these controls.
Set up Google Assistant privacy controls
- Open your Google Account: go to Data & privacy > Web & App Activity.
- Manage voice and audio activity: review the setting for saving voice and audio recordings. Google says it is off unless you turn it on.
- Review or delete saved activity: use the account activity controls to find and manage saved Assistant activity. Turning off voice and audio saving does not delete recordings saved previously.
- For immediate quiet: use the device’s microphone switch, if it has one, or turn off “Hey Google.” Check the instructions for your exact speaker, display, or clock.
Disabling audio saving does not stop Google from processing audio needed to answer a spoken request. Google’s audio recording controls explain the setting’s scope.

Use Guest Mode on a shared Google device
On supported Google speakers and displays, Guest Mode is intended for temporary use by visitors. Assistant activity in that mode is not saved to the device owner’s account, and personal results are withheld. It does not prevent third-party services used through Assistant from saving related activity. Availability varies by country and language; details are in Google’s Guest Mode support page.
Check connected services separately
Assistant history controls cover activity held by the platform within the controls’ stated scope. A linked third-party service, Alexa skill, or Google Assistant action may keep its own records. Review the privacy settings and deletion options for services you connect; deleting assistant history does not necessarily delete information held by another provider.

These controls are described in Amazon and Google support materials; they are not an independent verification of implementation or a comparison of every speaker model. Amazon’s cited FAQ is live documentation without a publication date specified in the material reviewed.
