Choose Google Authenticator if you want codes to sync through a Google Account across Android and iPhone, or if you need an app for iOS. Choose Aegis if you use Android and prefer an open-source app with an encrypted vault and backups you manage. Neither app is the universal security winner: the practical choice depends on your phone and how you want to recover your codes.
Google Authenticator vs. Aegis at a glance
| What matters | Google Authenticator | Aegis |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Android and iOS; Google lists Android 6.0 or later. | Android; the project lists Google Play and F-Droid. |
| How codes are recovered | Sign in to the same Google Account to sync codes, or transfer them manually with QR codes. | Restore from an encrypted vault backup or import/export files managed by the user. |
| Account requirement | Can sync with a Google Account or be used without signing in. | Project materials describe a vault and user-managed backups; they do not document Google Account sync. |
| Documented protections | Google says synced codes are encrypted in transit and at rest; the app offers an optional Privacy Screen. | The project describes AES-256-GCM vault encryption, password unlocking with scrypt, biometric unlocking via Android Keystore, and screen-capture prevention. |
| Best fit | People who want low-friction sync or need an authenticator on both Android and iOS. | Android users who want open-source software and control over backup and export choices. |
Platform, account recovery, and backup habits are more useful decision points than treating either app as categorically safer. Google Authenticator’s current feature descriptions are in Google Account Help; Aegis’s supported platforms and vault features are documented in the Aegis project repository.
Which app should you choose?
Choose Google Authenticator if you want account-linked sync
When you sign in to a Google Account in Authenticator, codes sync and can appear on a new device after you sign in to that account. That reduces the need to arrange a separate backup file, but it makes access to the Google Account part of your recovery plan. Google also lets you use Authenticator without an account; in that mode, codes remain on the device and do not sync to other devices.
Google Authenticator is also the relevant choice if you use an iPhone: Google documents Android and iOS support, while Aegis is an Android app. If you move between Android and iOS, Google Authenticator offers a documented option across both platforms.

Choose Aegis if you want Android-based, user-managed backups
Aegis is designed for Android and describes itself as a free, secure, open-source two-factor authentication app. Its project documentation describes an encrypted vault, automatic backups to a location you choose, and plaintext or encrypted exports. That gives you control over where backup data goes, but also responsibility for selecting a suitable destination and protecting exported data.
Aegis does not document Google Account-style cloud sync in the project materials cited here. Its backup approach is a better fit if you are comfortable managing files and checking that a backup can be found when you need it—not if you expect signing in on a replacement phone to restore everything automatically.

How backup and recovery differ
Google Authenticator: account sync or a QR transfer
Google documents two ways to move codes. With sync enabled, sign in to the Google Account used in Authenticator on the new device. If you use the app without an account, the old device can display QR codes for the new device to scan. Google’s manual transfer instructions require the old device and the latest version of the app. If the old phone is unavailable and the codes were never synced, the documented QR route cannot be performed from that phone.
Aegis: vault backup and chosen export destination
Aegis supports encrypted vault backups and exports, and lists Google Authenticator among its import sources. Its automatic backup feature writes to a destination you choose; “automatic” describes how the backup is made, not whether the destination is off-device or safe from loss. Check where the backup is stored and whether it will still be available if your phone is lost or damaged.

An encrypted vault backup and a plaintext export are not equivalent. A plaintext export may expose the underlying authentication secrets to anyone who obtains the file, so treat it as sensitive and avoid leaving it in an unprotected, shared, or easily accessible location. An encrypted export still depends on protecting the password or other means of unlocking it.
How to move Google Authenticator codes to Aegis
Aegis lists Google Authenticator as an import source. The exact screens can vary by app version, so follow the import flow shown in the versions installed on your devices. Do not erase the old app or reset the old phone until you have verified the transferred codes.

- Keep the old device and Authenticator setup intact. Make sure you can still open Google Authenticator on the phone that holds the codes.
- Prepare Aegis on Android. Install it from a source listed by the Aegis project and set up its vault protection and backup destination.
- Use Aegis’s import option. Select Google Authenticator if offered, then follow the app’s on-screen transfer instructions. Google Authenticator also provides a QR-based export route for moving codes between devices.
- Test the imported codes. Check several accounts by generating a code and confirming it works with the corresponding service. Keep access to the old setup while testing.
- Confirm account recovery options. Make sure you can still access each service and any recovery method you rely on before removing the old copy.
For a move to another Google Authenticator installation, Google’s documented options are account sync or QR export/import. For either route, retain the previous setup until the replacement has been checked.

Google Authenticator’s documented controls
Google says codes synced to a Google Account are encrypted in transit and at rest. It also offers a Privacy Screen that requires device verification to open the app. Codes can be generated without internet or mobile service, so a network connection is not required each time you use a code. If you opt out of account sync, Google says the codes stay on the device and are unavailable on other devices.

Sync can make recovery easier, but it also means your Google Account and its recovery protections matter to access on another device. Google advises using additional forms of 2-Step Verification and suggests passkeys for protecting a Google Account.
Aegis’s documented controls
The Aegis project describes an AES-256-GCM encrypted vault, password unlocking that uses scrypt, biometric unlocking via Android Keystore, and prevention of screen captures. These describe implementation controls in the project documentation; they do not guarantee that a user’s password, phone, or backup destination is secure.
Why an older app comparison cannot settle today’s choice
A 2023 USENIX Security Symposium paper, “Security and Privacy Failures in Popular 2FA Apps”, analyzed specific older releases, including Google Authenticator v5.10 and Aegis v2.0.3. Its findings provide historical context about backup design, not a current-version head-to-head audit. The paper also explains that the protection provided by password-derived backup encryption depends substantially on password strength. It should not be used to claim that either app is safer in its current release.
A practical decision checklist
- You use an iPhone: Google Authenticator is the option among these two with documented iOS support.
- You want codes to follow a Google sign-in: Google Authenticator’s account sync matches that preference; include Google Account access in your recovery planning.
- You do not want account-linked sync: Google Authenticator can be used without an account, but codes then remain on that device; Aegis offers a separate Android vault-and-backup model.
- You want control over backup files: Aegis provides user-chosen backup destinations and export options, with the corresponding responsibility to protect and retain those files.
- You want minimal backup handling: Google’s account sync can reduce manual transfer work, provided you are comfortable relying on the Google Account used for sync.
- You are changing apps or phones: Keep the old phone and app available, verify codes on the new setup, and confirm recovery access before deleting the original copy.
