If it is taking an action too soon, change its permissions: require approval before it sends, changes, deletes, buys, books, or shares anything. These are different problems, and a voice setting will not prevent an app action.
Is it interrupting your speech, or acting without the right timing?
First identify what went wrong. A voice assistant speaking over you or responding to background speech is a conversation and audio-control issue. An assistant sending a message, changing an account, or continuing a task without a suitable checkpoint is a permissions and oversight issue.
- For speech and listening: interrupt the response, mute or dismiss the session, or end it. If the assistant keeps misunderstanding you, reduce background noise or switch to a mode that lets you review your words before sending.
- For actions: restrict what the assistant can do, require approval for consequential steps, and review what has already happened if a task is stopped.
Controls depend on the product, device, account, and feature rollout. The examples below describe the platforms covered in official support documentation accessed October 7, 2026; check the current interface if a control is missing.
Why does ChatGPT interrupt me or stop speaking?
ChatGPT Voice allows you to speak while it responds, but overlapping speech and audio conditions can affect what it hears. OpenAI identifies background noise, long pauses, and another speaker as factors associated with interruptions.

Try these voice adjustments
- Move to a quieter place or try headphones; these can help reduce audio interference, but they do not guarantee that every interruption will stop.
- On iPhone, try Voice Isolation if it is available for your setup.
- Use Dictation when you want to review and edit a transcript before sending it rather than speaking into a live back-and-forth session.
- When you need the session to stop listening, use its mute, end, or dismiss control rather than relying on a pause in conversation.
OpenAI’s Voice help guidance describes these audio conditions and troubleshooting options. A microphone accessory is optional; start with the free environment and settings changes.
How do I stop an assistant from listening or speaking at the wrong time?
Use the control that matches the state you want: interrupt to redirect a response, mute to stop listening temporarily, or dismiss/end to close the active session. Wake-word and voice-activation settings are separate from permissions for actions the assistant may take in apps.
Copilot voice
Microsoft says Copilot voice users can interrupt or redirect a response by speaking, though background speech may still be picked up. Copilot stops listening when the user selects Mute or Dismiss. Its “Hey Copilot” wake feature must be enabled in settings and responds when explicitly called. Microsoft’s FAQ describes that feature as available on Windows desktop with a gradual rollout, not as a universal control on every Copilot device.

Siri requests sent to ChatGPT
Siri asks for confirmation before using ChatGPT by default. On supported Apple setups, the setting is at Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT; turning off Confirm ChatGPT Requests removes that request confirmation. Starting a request with “Ask ChatGPT…” can also bypass confirmation for that request. Siri still asks permission before sending a file, so disabling request confirmation does not automatically authorize file sharing.
How do I prevent an AI assistant from taking an action too early?
Set the approval boundary before delegating. For anything that could affect another person, an account, money, or sensitive information, ask the assistant to prepare the work but require your review before it acts. A request to draft a message is not permission to send it.
ChatGPT app permissions
For eligible apps or accounts, ChatGPT’s app permission controls may include options such as Always ask, allowing read actions, allowing low-risk actions, or allowing all actions. Availability and choices can depend on the account, workspace, and app. When an approval card appears, inspect the proposed action before accepting: important actions may expose sensitive information, affect an account, or be difficult to undo.

ChatGPT agent rules and background work
ChatGPT’s agent controls distinguish pausing a main task, stopping an individual delegated task, and canceling a scheduled run. Custom rules can specify that the agent should ask before acting, act only when explicitly told, or hand the action to you. Those rules do not override built-in requirements or grant access that you have not separately provided.
For work that continues in the background, check active delegated tasks and scheduled runs separately. OpenAI’s guidance says stopping work does not undo actions already completed, so inspect the resulting messages, files, or account changes after stopping a task.
Copilot plugins and external side effects
Microsoft’s guidance for API/MCP plugins in declarative agents describes a first-time connection prompt. After connection, read-only GET operations do not require confirmation; other operations prompt with the data to be sent and let the user accept or decline. Plugin developers can mark an operation as consequential with x-openai-isConsequential. Microsoft’s rule of thumb is to mark actions with external side effects as consequential so the user remains in control. This is guidance for that plugin setup, not a general permission setting for Microsoft 365 Copilot: Microsoft’s notice says these plugins are not enabled in Microsoft 365 Copilot generally.

Copilot Cowork
Microsoft’s support article describes the personal-account Copilot Cowork feature as a Preview. It requests permission before certain actions, including writing files, and provides controls to pause, resume, or cancel. Examples needing approval include payments, sharing personal information externally, messaging other people, account changes, and sensitive submissions. Microsoft cautions that the agent can make mistakes; review recipients, content, and other action details before approving.
Gemini app tasks on Android
For supported Android app tasks, Google says Gemini lets users view live progress, stop a task, or take control. Some tasks pause and ask the user to take control. Google’s help page notes a device limitation: on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26, users cannot take control for now and can stop the task instead. Support and controls may change as features roll out.

Stop or pause further work, then inspect the effects that have already occurred. A stop control is not a rollback: completed messages, file changes, or other actions may remain. If the product separates active tasks from scheduled work, review and cancel each one you no longer want to run.

Some pauses are safety measures rather than proof of an error. OpenAI says Astra-model conversations across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API may be paused or stopped when the system detects possible misinterpretation involving sensitive data access, data transfer, or destructive changes. Review the request and any proposed action before deciding whether to continue.
Why might an assistant still interrupt another activity?
Some assistant features are designed to run independently of the current conversation. Amazon’s Alexa developer guidance, for example, says a skill needs Global Timers Read/Write permission and explicit user permission for a timer’s extended experience; it also warns that a timer may ring while another Alexa interaction is underway. This is a developer-facing explanation, not a consumer setting path. For users, the practical lesson is to authorize timer or scheduled behavior knowingly rather than assuming it will wait for the current interaction to end.

If the labels do not match what you see, confirm the assistant, operating system, account type, and feature availability before following a menu path. Product controls and rollout status can change.
