Use Pixel Search to look across supported phone sources and the web; use Search in the Google app for Google Search and its optional Google Account-linked features. If you want to search something already visible in another app, Circle to Search is a separate option. Which results appear can depend on your Pixel model, enabled sources, account, region, language, and settings.
What each search experience is for
Pixel Search is the search surface built into the Pixel home screen. Google says it can find content from both the phone and the web, including apps and app content, contacts, settings, Play Store apps, recent screenshot thumbnails, Google Assistant actions, and Pixel tips. It is broader than a web-only search box, but that does not mean every query searches every item on the device. Google’s Pixel Search documentation describes the available sources and controls.
Search in the Google app is Google Search in the app. It provides web results and search tools, and may offer optional personal results based on information associated with your Google Account. Those account-linked features are distinct from Pixel Search’s controls for choosing which phone sources appear.
Circle to Search is different from both: it lets you select text or an image already on screen and see Search results without first switching away from the app you are using.

Choose the right starting point
| What you want to do | Start here | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Find an app, setting, contact, or supported app content | Pixel Search on the home screen | Searches documented phone sources and can also show web results. Available app content depends on the device and enabled sources. |
| Search only online | Google app Search, or the Pixel home-screen search bar | Google documents tapping the home-screen search bar as the route to search the web only. |
| Look for an answer related to your Google Account | Google app Search, with personal results enabled | May include history-based autocomplete, account-linked answers, or activity-based recommendations; not every query gets a personal result. |
| Search text or an image you can see in another app | Circle to Search | Select on-screen content and review results while the original app remains underneath. Supported devices and app restrictions apply. |
| Browse updates without entering a query | Discover in the Google app | A feed of updates about interests, rather than a typed-query search. Availability and recommendations vary. |
What Pixel Search can find—and how to control it
To search from the Pixel home screen, swipe up, enter a query, then tap a result. Google lists apps and app content, contacts and apps used to connect with them, settings, Play Store apps, recent screenshot thumbnails, Google Assistant actions, Pixel tips, and web results among the possible sources. The same help page documents this control path: Home settings → Search settings → Control search results. Use it to turn app sources on or off.
Search within particular apps is model-specific. Google’s help page specifically says Pixel 11 series users can search for information in Gmail, Clock and alarms, Messages, Drive, and Photos. That list should not be assumed to apply to every Pixel generation or to every app on a Pixel 11.

What Search in the Google app adds
Google Search tools and filters
The Google app gives you Google Search in an app interface. Search filters can narrow results by content type, including Images, Videos, News, and Shopping. Google also documents a Personal tool for finding content shared with the signed-in user in Google products such as Gmail. These Search filters and tools are not the same as Pixel Search’s list of device sources. See Google’s guide to Search filters.

Optional personal results
Google app settings include personal results. Depending on settings and available account information, they may provide autocomplete based on Search history, answers based on Google Account information (Google gives upcoming flights from Gmail as an example), or recommendations based on activity, such as what to watch or where to eat. These are possibilities, not a guarantee that Search will surface private account information for any particular query. Google describes these controls in its Google app settings help.
Personalization does not necessarily change every result. Google says it can affect some results, their order, or the placement of result blocks. Even with personalized recommendations off, Search can use factors such as location, language, device type, and current searches to make results more relevant. See Google’s explanation of personalization and Search results.

Discover is a feed, not search
Discover can show updates about interests without you entering a search, and is available in the Google app where supported. Its recommendations can use account activity and other settings; features vary across languages and countries. Google explains this in Customize what you find in Discover.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Circle to Search fits in
Circle to Search is useful when the thing you want to look up is already on screen—for example, text or an image in another app. Google’s documented gesture is to hold the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble on, or tap the relevant screen content and review the Search results. You can leave the original app visible underneath. Google says Circle to Search is available on Pixel 6 and later, but it may not work in some confidential apps, including banking or medical apps. Check Google’s Circle to Search help for details.
