To use it, install the software, configure a model provider, and confirm that a basic conversation works before adding skills, tools, or messaging integrations. It is software you configure—not a ready-made chatbot account—and its available capabilities depend on your setup.
What is Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent combines a configured language model with tools and continuing context. Nous Research documents interfaces including the command line, terminal interface, desktop app, web dashboard, and messaging gateway, along with persistent memory and reusable skills. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is enabled in a fresh installation. See the Hermes Agent overview.
You choose and configure a model provider so the agent can respond. Setup options and authentication requirements vary; consult the current Quickstart for supported routes rather than assuming a fixed provider list.
Choose a setup path
The official setup materials describe three approaches. The right one depends on whether you prefer a guided hosted-service path or more direct control over configuration.

Nous Research’s installation page describes the Portal subscription as covering 300+ models and lists Tool Gateway services including web search, image generation, text-to-speech, and cloud browser. This is the vendor’s product description, not an independent performance assessment; verify current packaging and terms on the official page.
Install Hermes Agent
Use the official installation guide for the current instructions and prerequisites. It documents a POSIX installer for Linux, macOS, and WSL2, a PowerShell route for native Windows, and a desktop installer. Avoid relying on copied installation commands that may become outdated.

- Open the Hermes Agent Installation guide and choose the route for your operating system.
- Follow that route’s current prerequisites and installation steps. If you prefer a graphical interface, check the desktop installation option.
- When installation finishes, open the command-line interface or follow the installer’s next-step instructions to configure the agent.
Configure a model and test a basic conversation
Configure one provider and model before adding integrations. Hermes documents hermes model for selecting them; its setup wizard can guide broader configuration. Exact prompts and available choices can change, so use the current Quickstart alongside the installed version.
- Run the setup flow or use
hermes modelto choose a provider and model. - Provide the required authentication and any endpoint details for that provider.
- Start a simple conversation and confirm that the agent returns a useful reply.
- Only after the base conversation works, add routing, tools, or messaging one at a time.
This order makes faults easier to isolate: a working baseline distinguishes provider or model problems from issues introduced by additional configuration.

Add skills, tools, and MCP servers
Skills for repeatable tasks
Skills are on-demand instruction documents that guide Hermes through particular tasks. Nous Research’s Quickstart describes browsing, searching, and installing skills, as well as writing your own. An installed skill can be called as a slash command. The agent loads a relevant skill when needed rather than treating every skill as a separate model.
Tools and MCP integrations
Tools and MCP servers extend what the agent can access, but availability depends on the setup path and configuration. The Quickstart shows how to configure an MCP server in Hermes’ configuration file. Add only integrations you understand and need, and consult the current documentation for configuration syntax and credentials.

Use Hermes through desktop or messaging
Desktop and shared sessions
Hermes Desktop is an interface to the same Hermes Agent core, not a separate agent. The desktop guide says the desktop app, CLI/TUI, and web dashboard share state, allowing a session begun in one surface to be resumed in another. The guide identifies support for macOS with Apple Silicon, Windows, and Linux. See the Hermes Desktop guide for current platform and installation details.
Messaging gateway
Set up messaging after the local or desktop conversation works. The documented command for configuring messaging platforms is hermes gateway setup. Follow the Quickstart for the platform-specific steps; a gateway can start yet remain unreachable if its bot token, allowlist, or platform configuration is incomplete.

Understand memory and learning claims
Nous describes Hermes as having persistent memory and a learning loop that can involve creating and improving skills. This is the publisher’s description of intended product behavior, not a promise that the agent will always be correct or that every task improves future results. Check the current configuration and security documentation before relying on memory or granting access to sensitive resources; the overview links to security guidance, but the specific controls and defaults are not detailed here.

Troubleshoot common first-run problems
- Empty or broken replies: Recheck provider authentication, the selected model, and any required endpoint settings.
- A custom endpoint gives poor results: Confirm the base URL and model name, and verify that the endpoint actually supports the expected OpenAI-compatible interface.
- A gateway starts but receives no messages: Check the bot token, allowlist, and platform configuration.
- Unexpected model fallback or routing: Return to a single stable provider configuration before tuning routing behavior.
