Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou don’t need to change every Pixel camera setting to take better everyday photos. Start with gridlines for composition, use Top Shot for people and movement, and choose formats and resolution to match how you shoot and store photos. The available controls vary by Pixel model, so check your Camera app if a setting below is missing.
Which Pixel camera settings are worth changing?
Think of these as tools for specific situations, not universal image-quality upgrades. Gridlines help with framing; Top Shot helps you pick a moment; RAW+JPEG suits an editing workflow; and aspect ratio and video resolution affect framing and storage. Google’s guides do not quantify photo-quality gains from changing these settings.
Turn on gridlines when you want help composing
Gridlines can make it easier to align a horizon or arrange a subject in the frame. To look for them, open the Camera app, open its settings, and select a grid type if your model offers that control. Treat the grid as a guide, not a rule.
Some Pixel cameras also offer framing hints. Google describes on-screen lines that meet when the phone is level, plus an up/down indicator that can help when you point the camera above or below a subject. The exact controls and menus depend on the model. See Google’s Camera app settings guide and high-quality photo guide.

Use Top Shot for people and action
Top Shot captures a burst and automatically selects a frame. Google’s instructions differ by generation: Pixel 10 and later use Auto, while Pixel 9a and earlier can offer Auto or On. With Motion photos, you can choose a preferred frame later. This is useful when a person blinks, turns, or moves just as you take a group or action photo.
Auto Best Take is a separate, optional group-photo feature for Pixel 10 and later. It requires Google Photos and Top Shot to be enabled, so it is not available to every Pixel owner. Check Google’s Top Shot instructions for model-specific details.

Should you use RAW or JPEG on a Pixel?
For most casual shooting, JPEG is a straightforward, ready-to-share choice. If you plan to edit your photos, RAW+JPEG gives you a RAW file to work with as well as a JPEG copy. RAW is an editing-workflow choice, not a guarantee that the photo will look better without editing.
Google documents the RAW/JPEG control under Camera settings and Advanced options; Pixel 8 Pro does not require the setup step described for other models. If you do not see the control, consult the settings instructions for your phone.

When should you use 50 MP or Pro Controls?
These are model-specific options, not settings every Pixel owner should seek out. Google lists 50 MP capture on Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. Pro Controls for focus, shutter speed, and ISO are documented for Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL.
If you have a standard Pixel or a Pro model that is not listed for a particular control, it may not appear in your Camera app. Check Google’s supported photo features before looking for a Pro setting.

Which aspect ratio and resolution should you choose?
Choose 4:3 or 16:9 for the framing you want
Google lists Full image (4:3) and Wide crop (16:9) as photo aspect-ratio choices. Choose based on the composition you want: 16:9 is a crop, while 4:3 preserves the full image framing described by Google. Neither is the right choice for every scene.
Reduce video resolution when storage matters
Google’s Camera settings guide describes reducing video resolution to Full HD to save storage. That can be a practical choice if conserving space matters more than recording at a higher resolution. Google does not prescribe one resolution as best for everyone. Find the relevant video controls in the Camera app settings if they are available on your model.

Should you turn on Frequent Faces?
Frequent Faces can help the camera recommend better shots of people you photograph often. Google says face data stays on the device, is not sent to Google, and is deleted if you turn the feature off. On Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, Google says the feature can also help the camera show skin tones more accurately. It is optional; review the Top Shot and Frequent Faces guidance if you want to use it.
How do you get a better shot without changing settings?
Google’s basic guidance is to point the camera, wait for focus, and tap the shutter. For zoom, use a pinch gesture, double-tap, or the zoom slider. A setting cannot compensate for every framing or focus issue, so these simple actions are useful even when you leave the camera configured as it is.
You can also decide whether to save location stamps or use storage controls based on your preferences. Google’s instructions include these options and dirty-lens warnings, but do not quantify a photo-quality improvement from changing them. See Google’s getting-started guide for Pixel photos.
