A traffic drop that overlaps a Google update is a clue, not proof that the update caused it. Check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the update and its rollout dates, then compare affected pages, queries, and search types in Search Console after the rollout is over. Core updates broadly reassess search systems; spam updates change automated spam-detection systems. Neither alone confirms why a particular site lost visibility.
How core updates and spam updates differ

Google distinguishes notable updates to help site owners understand which systems may be involved, but timing does not establish cause. A decline during a spam update does not prove a spam violation or a manual penalty; a decline during a core update does not establish that the core update caused it.
Did a Google core update affect your site?
Use the rollout window as a starting point, then look for a broad pattern in Search Console rather than relying on one page or a single day’s traffic. Google recommends waiting at least a full week after a core update is complete before comparing performance.
- Confirm the update and dates. Open the Search Status Dashboard and note when the relevant update began and ended. It reports notable updates; an unlisted, isolated, or limited issue is still possible.
- Choose comparable periods. After rollout completion, wait at least one full week, then compare a period after the update with a week before it began. Avoid treating an ongoing rollout as a final result.
- Find the losses. In Search Console, open Performance and compare clicks, impressions, and average position. Identify the pages and queries with the largest changes, and separate Web, Images, Video, or News results when relevant.
- Assess the size and breadth of position changes. A small movement on a handful of queries is different from a substantial decline across many pages. Google advises assessing the scale of position changes instead of reacting to an isolated fluctuation.
For a broader decline that coincides with the rollout and remains in comparable periods, a core update is a plausible explanation—not a confirmed site-specific cause. Google describes core updates as broad in nature, not as penalties aimed at individual websites.

How to tell whether a spam update may be involved
Check the Dashboard for a spam update that overlaps the decline, but treat that overlap as a reason to investigate rather than a verdict. Google says spam updates improve automated spam-detection systems. A change may reflect systems identifying spam, or a link spam update may discount ranking benefits associated with spammy links.
- Read the relevant Google Search spam policies and look for practices on your site that may violate them.
- Check the Manual Actions report in Search Console. A manual action is a human-applied measure; an algorithmic change can affect visibility without a manual action appearing there.
- If you find a policy violation, correct the underlying practice. Do not assume a traffic decline is evidence of a violation when you have found none.
Google recommends reviewing its spam policies when a site changes after a spam update. That is a reason to check compliance, not proof that every affected site was using spam tactics.

Rule out other causes before changing pages
Google’s traffic-drop troubleshooting guidance notes that a loss in organic Search can have several explanations and may not be straightforward to diagnose. Check these possibilities alongside update timing:
- Indexing or crawling problems: Review Search Console indexing information and Crawl Stats for technical issues that could affect important URLs.
- Security problems: Check the Security Issues report for threats affecting the site.
- Manual actions: Review the Manual Actions report for a human-applied action; its presence is distinct from an algorithmic update.
- Seasonality or changing interest: Compare demand over time with Google Trends. Search interest can change without a ranking-system change.
- Site moves: If URLs or the domain changed, investigate migration and recrawling issues.
- Data anomalies: Check whether a reporting irregularity or unusual data pattern could explain the apparent change.
What to do once the evidence points somewhere
If a spam-policy violation is evident
Correct the practice in line with Google’s Search Essentials. Use the Manual Actions report to determine whether Google has separately applied a manual action. Do not treat the absence of a manual action as proof that automated systems have had no effect.

If the decline looks consistent with a core update
Review the affected pages against the needs behind the queries that lost visibility. Focus on whether those pages serve readers better than competing results, rather than making edits solely to chase a ranking signal. Google cautions against drastic changes in response to small position shifts; improvements are not guaranteed to produce a measurable ranking gain.
Set realistic expectations for recovery
Google says changes can take days or several months to be reflected. For spam systems, recognizing that a site complies may take months; where a link spam system has removed benefits from spammy links, those benefits may not return. No recovery timetable or ranking improvement is guaranteed.
