A drop in Google Search visibility around a spam update does not, by itself, prove the update caused it. First compare the dates with Google’s published update information and check Search Console for a manual action. The next steps depend on whether Google issued a manual action or the decline reflects ranking systems reassessing the site.

How to diagnose a Google Search visibility drop

Start with the evidence rather than the timing of a traffic graph. Google advises site owners whose performance changes to troubleshoot the decline; a ranking loss alone does not establish that the site received a spam action.

  1. Compare dates: Check when visibility changed against Google’s published ranking-update information. A coincidence is a reason to investigate, not proof of cause.
  2. Check Search Console: Look for a manual action notice. A manual action is a distinct enforcement outcome that may follow automated detection or human review.
  3. Identify scope: Determine whether the change affects the whole site, a section, or particular pages. Review any Search Console notice for the affected practice or content.

Google’s traffic-drop troubleshooting guidance is useful when there is no manual action notice or when the cause is not clear.

What to do if Search Console shows a manual action

Use the notice to identify the policy issue and affected pages or sections. Review the named issue alongside Google’s broader spam policies, then correct the violations before requesting reconsideration.

  1. Read the manual action details in Search Console and identify the affected content or behavior.
  2. Remediate the violations covered by the notice. Check related pages so the same practice is not left elsewhere on the site.
  3. After the corrections are complete, submit a reconsideration request through Search Console.
  4. Allow several weeks for Google to process the request.

A reconsideration request is the route for a manual action. Google’s spam-update guidance does not prescribe one for an algorithmic ranking decline when no manual action has been issued.

What to do if there is no manual action

Review the spam policies and audit the pages or sections affected by the decline. Google’s examples include cloaking, doorway abuse, expired-domain abuse, hacked content, hidden text or links, and keyword stuffing; the policy documentation covers additional practices. If you find a violation, correct it and keep the site compliant.

Google says changes may help if its automated systems learn over a period of months that a site complies with its spam policies. That is qualitative guidance, not a fixed recovery schedule. Continue monitoring performance, but do not treat a reconsideration request as a way to speed up automated reassessment.

How long recovery takes—and what Google does not promise

Google has not provided a guaranteed recovery date or promise that rankings will return to their previous positions. Its guidance says automated systems may take months to recognize that a site complies; it does not publish a typical recovery rate or duration.

Link-spam updates carry an additional qualification. When Google neutralizes spammy links, it may remove ranking benefits those links had been generating. Google says those potential benefits cannot be regained. Removing the spam effect therefore does not guarantee restoration of positions previously supported by those links.

How the site-reputation policy applies to EEA audiences

In an update dated August 28, 2026, Google said that, beginning August 30, site-reputation manual actions affect results shown outside the European Economic Area (EEA). For users inside the EEA, that manual-action impact does not apply; the affected section may instead be separated in Google’s systems and rank independently over time. Google continues to notify site owners in Search Console. Eligible sites may bring disputes to mediation after reconsideration. See Google’s site-reputation policy update for the details.

Do Google Ads restore organic visibility?

No. Google states that its advertising programs are independent of organic Search results. Buying ads does not improve a site’s organic inclusion or ranking. See Google’s guidance on troubleshooting Search traffic changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have a Google manual action?

Check Search Console for a manual action notice. A visibility decline alone is not evidence that Google issued one.

Should I submit a reconsideration request after a spam update?

Submit one only when Search Console shows a manual action, and only after correcting the violations identified. Google does not prescribe reconsideration requests for declines without a manual action.

Can paying for Google Ads improve my organic rankings?

No. Google says its advertising programs are independent of organic results; buying ads does not improve organic inclusion or ranking.
