Google has confirmed that ads can appear below and within AI Mode responses, but the reported change from two bottom ads to three is not verified as a Google-wide rollout. A September 2026 report documented changing shopping-ad placements in screenshots; it did not establish that exact count.
What Google has confirmed about ads in AI Mode
Google said on May 21, 2025, that “Where relevant, ads may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses.” The announcement made advertisers using Performance Max and Shopping campaigns, as well as Search campaigns with broad match—including AI Max for Search—eligible for ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eligibility and possible placement do not specify how many ads appear in a particular response. Google Ads & Commerce Blog, May 21, 2025.
On May 20, 2026, Google described two AI Mode ad formats under test: Conversational Discovery ads, which respond to a person’s specific question, and Highlighted Answers, which may appear in recommendation lists. Google said both would be labeled “Sponsored.” That announcement describes formats, not a three-ad group at the bottom of the page. Google Ads & Commerce Blog, May 20, 2026.
What the reported screenshots show—and what they do not
PPC Land reported on September 6, 2026, that screenshots showed a shopping carousel inline within an AI Mode answer alongside a sponsored placement at the foot of the page. The report said Google had not announced or documented the observed test. It is evidence of reported placement experimentation, not confirmation that Google changed the bottom block from two ads to three, or that the display applies to all users. The exact “three instead of two” count, when it began, and its geographic, device, query, and account scope remain unverified in the available sources. A screenshot can show what appeared in one search at one time; without those details or a Google announcement, it cannot establish a general rollout.

Does Google’s four-ad Search limit explain the count?
No. Google’s October 13, 2025 guidance says text ads in a Search “Sponsored results” grouping would be limited to no more than four. That is general Search labeling guidance, not a published limit or count for ads at the bottom of AI Mode. AI Mode placements may also use formats such as shopping tiles or carousels rather than a conventional text-ad grouping. Google Ads & Commerce Blog, October 13, 2025.
How to interpret what you see
- Check whether the item is labeled “Sponsored”; do not assume every product or recommendation in an AI answer is an ad.
- Separate inline placements from ads below the answer or at the page foot. They are different positions and may use different formats.
- If comparing the count over time, note the date, country, device, query, account state, and exact placement. Without those details, an individual display does not establish a general change.
