The work is being delivered to the android16-6.12 and android15-6.6 kernel branches, but Google has not published a complete list of phones receiving it or a quantified battery-life gain.
What AutoFDO changes in Android
Automatic Feedback-Directed Optimization, or AutoFDO, uses observed program execution patterns to help a compiler decide how to optimize code. Those choices can include which functions to inline and how to arrange code in memory. Google says this profile-guided approach can prioritize paths used in representative Android workloads more effectively than relying on static compiler hints alone.
This announcement concerns Android kernel builds: the low-level software that manages hardware and system resources. It is distinct from Google’s earlier AutoFDO work on native userspace executables and libraries. Google estimates that the kernel accounts for about 40% of CPU time on Android, which is why optimizing it could matter to overall responsiveness and efficiency. Google’s Android LLVM toolchain team describes the kernel effort as intended to produce a “snappier interface, faster app switching, extended battery life, and an overall more responsive device.” That is Google’s description of the intended benefits, not a promise of a particular result on every phone.
How Google builds and checks its profiles
Google says it profiles controlled lab workloads for the Generic Kernel Image (GKI), including launches of popular apps and AI-driven app crawling that simulates changing user interactions. The company reports that this synthesized workload has 85% similarity to execution patterns in its internal fleet. That figure describes Google’s comparison of its lab workload with its own fleet data, not an independent measure of how representative it is for every user.

Google’s pipeline captures profiles, filters and trims them, checks profile and binary changes, then benchmarks updated kernel images. It says profiles are refreshed regularly ahead of GKI releases so they can reflect changes in Android code and usage patterns. The company reports measuring the new kernel profiles on Pixel devices running 6.1, 6.6, and 6.12 kernels; it does not publish a quantified consumer-facing performance or battery result for the kernel work.
What the earlier AutoFDO numbers do—and do not—show
Google’s Android LLVM team reports that its earlier AutoFDO optimization of userspace native executables and libraries improved cold app launches by about 4% and reduced boot time by 1%. Those figures apply to the earlier userspace work, not to the kernel profiles now being delivered. Google’s March 10, 2026 announcement gives no percentage estimate for battery-life improvement from kernel AutoFDO.

Which Android phones will get it?
Google says updated profiles are currently being delivered to the android16-6.12 and android15-6.6 kernel branches, with expansion to newer GKI versions planned. Branch support is not the same as confirmation that a specific retail phone has received a user-visible update. Android devices use varied kernels and manufacturer release processes, and Google has not provided a handset-by-handset list or timetable in its announcement.
Google has also announced other Android performance and battery initiatives, but they are separate from AutoFDO. Its Android 17 memory limits are intended to protect performance and battery life, starting with Pixel and reaching eligible Android devices during 2026. Separately, Google Play began rolling out technical quality treatments on March 1, 2026, for apps with excessive non-exempted partial wake locks: an average of at least two hours with the screen off in more than 5% of user sessions over the previous 28 days. That policy can affect app listings and discovery; it is not a kernel optimization. Android 17 overview and Google Play’s Android vitals guidance describe those other efforts.

What you can do to extend battery life now
AutoFDO is a system-level change, not an optimizer app or setting you need to install. Until a relevant kernel update reaches a particular device, Google’s support guidance recommends using the battery controls available for that phone. Options vary by model and manufacturer; see Google’s Android battery-saving guidance and the phone maker’s instructions.
- Lower screen brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Check which apps use the most battery and restrict background use where appropriate.
- Enable Adaptive Battery or Battery Saver if your phone offers them.
- Avoid excessive heat, which Google says increases battery drain.
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. Some apps may be delayed, and connectivity, features, or visual effects may be reduced. Google also advises charging with the adapter supplied with the phone; another adapter may charge slowly or not at all and could damage the phone or battery. Follow the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. A charger cannot install AutoFDO, make Android run faster, or guarantee longer battery life.
