Start by checking the RCS status in Google Messages: tap your profile picture, then Messages settings > RCS chats. Some versions call this Chat features. The status usually tells you whether to check number verification, your connection, the recipient, or carrier support.
Check what the RCS status says
- Open Google Messages and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Messages settings > RCS chats, or Chat features if that is the label in your version.
- Read the status and follow the matching steps below.

If RCS is stuck on Connecting or awaiting retry
Activation depends on both an internet connection and the ability to receive SMS for phone-number verification. Check that mobile service is working and that the phone can receive a text message. Keep Google Messages and Google Play services up to date, and make Google Messages the default SMS app. Google lists Android 5.0 or later as a minimum requirement for RCS activation.
If Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry remains for more than 30 minutes, go to the status details and choose Submit feedback. If the app says the carrier disabled RCS, contact the carrier rather than repeatedly changing phone settings; use Retry after the carrier addresses it. If the RCS setting is missing or says Not supported
First confirm Google Messages is the default SMS app and that the phone has internet access. The RCS setting may not be available for a particular phone or carrier, and availability varies by device, carrier, and region. A “Not supported” message does not by itself show that the phone is defective or needs replacing. If a carrier-disabled notice appears, ask the carrier whether it can enable the service for your line.
If RCS works with some contacts but not one
RCS works in a conversation only when the other participant also has RCS enabled. Check that the contact’s phone number is correct, including its country code, and confirm the person is not blocked. If you recently moved your number from an iPhone, deactivate iMessage for that number; otherwise, messages from iPhone users may continue to be routed through Apple’s service.

If messages still will not send or arrive
Check the basics for SMS and MMS as well as RCS: make sure the SIM is correctly inserted, cellular signal is available, airplane mode is off, and your carrier plan supports messaging and has sufficient balance. Update Google Messages, set it as the default texting app, and confirm the phone can connect to the internet. Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS when RCS or data is unavailable. The compose bar indicates whether a message will use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. To review the resend choices, open Messages settings > RCS chats and check the resend option. Menu labels and availability can vary by device, software version, carrier, and region.
