Choose Google Preferred Sources to see selected publishers more often in relevant Google Search results; subscribe to a publisher’s newsletter to receive its email edition. They serve different purposes, and you can use both: one affects what Google may highlight in Search, while the other delivers content to your inbox.
What Google Preferred Sources changes
Preferred Sources is a personalization feature for Google Search. When a source you select has published fresh, relevant coverage for a query, its articles may appear more prominently in Top Stories. Google also says preferred-source badges can appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews. This affects visibility within Google’s products; it does not guarantee that a selected publisher will appear in every search or that every relevant story will be shown. Google’s announcement describes the feature, and Google Search Central’s publisher guidance says it is available for Top Stories in all languages where Google Search is available.
Google’s announcement puts the effect this way: “When you select your preferred sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.”
How to select or remove a source
In Google Search, find the control alongside Top stories and use it to choose sources. To change your choices later, return to that control and select or deselect sources. The exact steps are in Google Search Help.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Publishers can point readers to the source-preferences tool with a text link, clickable image, or Google’s button implementation; Google’s guidance also describes a deeplink. These options apply when the publisher’s site is available in the tool.
What a publisher’s newsletter provides
A newsletter is an email product from a specific publisher that you choose to receive. It may deliver a regular selection of that publisher’s coverage to your inbox, but its subjects and sending schedule depend on the publisher. Check the signup page for frequency, content, and any terms; newsletters are not all free, equally frequent, or limited to exclusive stories. Google News Initiative recommends that publishers make the newsletter’s subject and frequency clear.

How the two options compare
| Factor | Google Preferred Sources | Publisher newsletter |
|---|---|---|
| Where content appears | In Google Search, especially relevant Top Stories results; Google also identifies badges in AI Mode and AI Overviews. | In your email inbox. |
| Selection | You can choose multiple sources. | The email product belongs to the publisher you subscribe to. |
| Timing and relevance | Prominence depends on a selected source having fresh, relevant content for your search. | Content and cadence depend on the publisher’s newsletter. |
| What you control | Which sources you prefer in Search. | Whether to sign up for that publisher’s email product; check its signup details for subject and frequency. |
Which should you choose?
- Choose Preferred Sources if you want Google Search to give selected outlets more prominence when they have relevant, fresh stories.
- Subscribe to the newsletter if you want that publisher to send an email edition to your inbox.
- Use both if you want both experiences: in-Search prominence and email delivery.
Neither choice guarantees complete coverage or a particular delivery frequency. The official materials describe how each channel works, but do not establish a controlled head-to-head comparison showing which is better for an individual reader.
What Google’s figures do—and don’t—show
Google reported in 2026 that readers are twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it as a Preferred Source. That is Google’s platform finding, not a guarantee for an individual reader or publisher. Google’s announcement provides the figure.

Separately, Google News Initiative says newsletter subscribers were 10X more likely to become paid subscribers, attributing the finding to its Subscriptions Lab. The cited page does not state a date for that figure. It concerns publishers’ subscription conversion, not whether a reader will be more satisfied with a newsletter than with Preferred Sources. Because the two figures measure different outcomes, they are not a valid head-to-head scorecard. Google News Initiative’s newsletter guidance discusses the finding and newsletter practices.
