Google’s official information reviewed for this article does not document an option to add an event to Google Calendar directly from an AI Overview. Google does offer separate calendar workflows through Gemini in Gmail, Gemini Apps, and Google Assistant; each starts in a different place and has its own limits.
Can Google AI Overviews add an event to your calendar?
Google’s August 15, 2024 announcement about AI Overviews describes the Search feature and its links to websites, but does not describe creating a Calendar event from an AI Overview. That documentation therefore does not establish an “Add to calendar” button in Search. It also cannot rule out a limited or later experiment that the announcement does not cover.
If you see a date or event in an AI Overview, use a documented calendar workflow instead: create an event yourself, use an eligible Gmail option, or ask Gemini Apps to create one in a connected calendar. Check the event details before relying on it.

Add an event from an email with Gemini in Gmail

Google’s March 10, 2025 announcement describes Gemini identifying calendar-related information in an email and displaying an “Add to calendar” button. The announced web workflow was English-only. Google said the button would not appear when Gmail had already extracted an event from the message, giving restaurant and flight emails as examples. Events created through this button do not include other guests.

On Android or iOS
Google announced Gemini in Gmail mobile support on August 13, 2025. The email must be in English. When a message contains multiple events, Gemini may offer to add all of them; guests must be added afterward. These are Gmail email workflows, not a button in an AI Overview.
Google Calendar Help separately lists creating an event from a Gmail message as available to all Gmail users. That basic Gmail option should not be confused with Gemini-assisted features, which have their own availability. See Google Calendar Help: Learn how to schedule events in Gmail.

Create or manage an event with Gemini Apps
Gemini Apps can create and manage events in connected calendar apps. For Google Calendar, Google’s Gemini Apps Help says to connect Google Workspace and use the same account; Keep Activity must be on to connect calendar apps.
Gemini Apps cannot add or invite people, and Google documents restrictions on editing some event details. Google also cautions that Gemini can hallucinate or provide outdated information. Review the date, time, time zone, location, and other details in Calendar, then add any guests yourself.

What to do if you do not see an “Add to calendar” button
- You are looking at Search: The reviewed AI Overviews announcement does not document a calendar button. Open Calendar and create the event, or use a supported Gmail or Gemini workflow.
- You are looking at Gmail: The Gemini email button may not appear if Gmail has already extracted the event, or if the message does not meet the workflow’s language and availability conditions.
- You are using Gemini Apps: Check that the calendar is connected to the same account and that Keep Activity is on, as Google requires for connecting calendar apps.
- You need to invite people: Add guests in Calendar after the event is created; the Gmail button’s event omits guests, and Gemini Apps cannot add or invite people.
Google Assistant event discovery is a separate feature
Google Assistant Help describes a smart-display workflow that finds suggested events and lets the user add a selected event to Calendar. Google documents it for English in the United States. It is not evidence of an equivalent feature in AI Overviews: it starts on an Assistant smart display and uses suggested local events rather than a Search result.
