“Make games with AI” covers several workflows, not one universal game generator. The key distinction is whether you want to explore a generated environment or build software that behaves like a game.

Project Genie creates worlds to explore
Project Genie is best understood as a text- and image-to-world prototype, not a conventional game engine. Google says people can create an environment, explore it interactively, and remix worlds. Its January 29, 2026 announcement presented the project as experimental research; the current access details are on Google Labs Help.
Who can access Project Genie
Google’s current Help page says users need a personal Google Account, Google AI Ultra membership where available, and must be at least 18. People who cannot access the tool may still be directed to a gallery. Availability can change, so check the Help page for the current requirements in your location before relying on access.

What to expect from a generated world
The documented purpose is generating and interacting with environments—not producing a polished, complete game with dependable rules, progression, menus, and publishing built in. Treat a generated world as something to explore and iterate on, rather than a shippable game unless you have verified and added the features your project needs.
AI Studio and Antigravity target game software
Google’s AI product materials showcase using Antigravity to create a playable 3D game and to build games that improve themselves. These are code-centered workflows: the aim is to make or modify software, rather than simply generate a world to walk through. The examples demonstrate capabilities, not a guarantee that a prompt will produce a complete or reliable release.

A documented web-game workflow
Google Developers’ codelab, updated September 9, 2026, walks through building a web-based, turn-based video game. It has AI Studio Build Mode generate a game with Gemini, then uses Firestore for persistence and Firebase Authentication for sign-in, before deploying the result to Cloud Run. Follow the codelab for its specific steps and setup; it is an example workflow, not a one-click publishing promise for every game.
This route gives a creator software and services to work with, so it is the more relevant starting point if the goal is editable game logic or a web app. The cited example also illustrates that a playable project may need supporting services and deployment work beyond generating initial code.

What Google’s I/O mini-games demonstrate
Google’s 2026 I/O Save the Date experience used Gemini in a collection of mini-games. Google reports that the puzzle had five games and an unlockable Dino Pal. Gemini helped brainstorm and prototype game ideas, generate some puzzle levels, offer contextual mini-golf tips, and give the virtual pet adaptive personality traits. Google said developers could inspect and remix the games’ code in AI Studio.
Kacey Fahey, a marketing manager on the I/O Save the Date puzzle, described the goal this way: “The concept, ‘Make Build Unlock,’ was designed to welcome audiences of any technical level, entertaining everyone from casual gamers to developers who want to build their own.” Google’s March 6, 2026 account presents this as a specific demonstration, not a measured result for game development generally.

Which approach fits your project?
- Choose Project Genie if you want to experiment with generated environments and explore or remix them, and you meet its current access requirements.
- Look at AI Studio or Antigravity if you want to generate or edit game code and are prepared to test, revise, and potentially connect supporting services.
- Study the I/O examples in AI Studio if you want to see how Gemini can support individual features such as generated levels, contextual hints, or adaptive character behavior.
The available examples establish that Google’s tools can support these different activities. They do not establish a comparable success rate, development-time saving, or level of game quality, and they do not show that conventional game engines are unnecessary.
