Strong climate projects begin with a local question and traceable evidence—not with an AI tool. Students can collect their own observations, analyze public records, explore climate-model outputs, or design an adaptation. AI may help organize information or suggest questions, but students should verify sources, interpret results, and support conclusions with evidence they can inspect.

How to choose a climate project approach

Start by choosing a climate-related question that matters in your school or community: Where is heat most intense? Which places are exposed to flooding? How might a proposed change affect people or ecosystems? Then choose an approach that can answer that question at an appropriate scale.

Climate evidence can include student observations, satellite and other observation records, and broader physical, biological, geographic, social, economic, and historical data. Those sources can help students investigate impacts and consider mitigation or adaptation options, as described in NOAA’s climate science literacy materials. Check the page’s current availability before assigning it.

  • Evidence: Is it a measurement students collected, a public record, or a model output?
  • Scale: Does it cover a classroom, neighborhood, region, or much larger area—and what time period?
  • Local relevance: Does the evidence address the place and climate risk in the project question?
  • Access: Can students use the method with available equipment, data, and support?
  • Reproducibility: Can students inspect the source and explain how they reached their result?
  • Use: Does the evidence inform an explanation, a design, or a decision?

These are practical comparison questions, not a validated scoring rubric. In a report or presentation, identify the data source, date range, units, and limitations. That makes it easier for others to judge what the evidence does—and does not—show.

Four project ideas, from observations to adaptation

1. Compare shade and surfaces to investigate local heat

Question: How do shade and surface type relate to temperature around a school or neighborhood?

Students can take readings at different locations, surfaces, shade conditions, and times. A digital thermometer is one possible tool, not a requirement; public observations or datasets can support a project without buying equipment. Record when and where readings were taken, the units, conditions such as shade, and any relevant measurement limits. A small local sample can describe the locations and times measured, but it cannot by itself establish a long-term climate trend. Compare it with suitable regional or historical records before making broader claims.

2. Map a local climate risk

Question: Which places or groups may be more exposed to heat, drought, flooding, or wildfire, and what information would help assess options?

Students can map a locally relevant hazard and consider what additional information is needed to understand exposure and vulnerability. The Fifth National Climate Assessment describes hazard and vulnerability mapping and decision-support tools as adaptation approaches. A map can make patterns visible, but it does not automatically explain why they occur or establish who is at risk. Identify the map’s source, scale, date, and missing information, and consider equity and accessibility when discussing responses.

3. Compare model outputs with observations

Question: How do model assumptions or scenarios affect the result, and how does that result compare with observed records?

Students can explore an appropriate climate model or its outputs, note the scenario or assumptions used, and compare the result with observation records relevant to the question. Keep model output and observed measurements distinct: they are different kinds of evidence. NASA GISS hosts a 2025 study abstract about two secondary teachers’ implementation of EzGCM. It reports that model-centric practices increased modestly over three years but remained less model-centric than the designed curriculum. The study is limited to those teachers and that curriculum; it is not an evaluation of generative AI or proof that every classroom will get the same result. See the NASA GISS EzGCM study abstract.

4. Design and monitor an adaptation

Question: What local change could reduce a climate risk, who could benefit, and how would its effect be monitored?

Students might propose shade, green space, a rain garden, rainwater capture, or another context-appropriate response. They can sketch or model the intervention, describe tradeoffs and potential beneficiaries, and identify what evidence would show whether it is helping. The National Climate Assessment describes adaptation options that include observation systems, data and visualization tools, planning, infrastructure, behavior, and technology; it also identifies equity and accessibility as considerations. Its examples include green space, rain gardens, water capture, and monitoring systems.

Where AI fits—and where it does not

AI is an optional computational support, not a source of climate evidence by itself. A student might use an approved tool to help organize a dataset or generate questions for a teacher to review. The project’s measurements, source checks, interpretation, and conclusions should remain tied to traceable evidence.

The National Climate Assessment names artificial intelligence and machine learning among technologies relevant to adaptation. That does not establish that generative AI improves student learning, produces reliable climate claims, or is appropriate for a particular student or classroom. The cited sources also do not establish product-specific privacy rules, age limits, account requirements, or terms. Educators should check applicable school policies and the current terms of any tool before use, and students should verify factual claims against original data and authoritative sources.

Finding classroom resources

NOAA’s Toolbox for Teaching Climate & Energy organizes education resources around climate and energy and describes a learning-to-action process. NOAA marks this material as archived and not maintained, so some links or information may no longer be current.

The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit lists beginner Climate Change Education Modules dated 2024. They cover climate science, effects on forest and grassland ecosystems, and management responses. Match any resource to students’ grade level and region, and adapt hazards, standards, and data sources to the local context.
